Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind (Video Game)

Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind is a Platform Game and the first game in the Bubsy series, developed and published by Accolade and released in 1993 for the SNES and Sega Genesis. It was later ported to Microsoft Windows in 1997 under the title Super Bubsy.

A race of aliens called the Woolies, led by the two-headed queens Poly and Ester, are plotting to steal all the Earth's yarn. They decide to begin by targeting the wisecracking Bubsy the Bobcat, as he owns the world's largest collection of yarn, and steal all of it while Bubsy is sleeping. Unfortunately for the Woolies, they've chosen to invade the space of one "purr-fectly fur-ocious" feline set on smiting evil-doers (or at least, that's how he sees himself), and so Bubsy takes it upon himself to defeat the aliens and reclaim his yarn.

The game was rereleased in 2015 as one half of the Bubsy Two-Fur pack on Steam, alongside Bubsy II. The 2025 Compilation Re-release Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection was another collection that included this game, alongside the rest of the Bubsy games released during the series' original run (except the aforementioned Super Bubsy). 2025 would also see the SNES version released to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers as part of the Nintendo Classics collection.

Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind contains examples of:

  • 1-Up: Bubsy can gain extra lives by collecting white T-shirts. They come in varieties that grant either one or two lives.
  • Accordion Man: Dying from fall damage will result in Bubsy splatting on the ground before getting up and walking away while his body squashes and stretches in an accordion shape.
  • Amusement Park: Chapters 4 through 6 are set in a funfair. The lower tiers of these levels are filled with different carnival games being patrolled by Woolies that Bubsy must navigate, while the upper tiers are made up of roller coaster tracks that sometimes have cars for Bubsy to ride in.
  • Cats Hate Water: As an explanation for Bubsy's Super Drowning Skills, he mentions in the instruction manual that he hates water.
  • Cats Have Nine Lives: Bubsy is a bobcat, and starts out with nine Video-Game Lives.
  • Circling Birdies: If Bubsy hits a wall after running into it too fast, he will fall on his behind and sit there with birds circling around his head, which he has to swat away before getting back up. This is notably one of the few injuries you can inflict on Bubsy that don't immediately kill him.
  • Creator Cameo: The first password you get at the end of chapter 3 is "MKBRLN", possibly a reference to Michael Berlyn, Bubsy's creator.
  • Dual Boss: The bosses of the first two worlds are a pair of UFOs fought at the same time.
  • Goomba Stomp: Bubsy can defeat Woolies by jumping on them.
  • Invisibility Cloak: The Black T-Shirt power-up makes Bubsy invisible to Woolies.
  • Is There a Doctor in the House?: In the intro for "Claws for Alarm", Bubsy says, "Is there a veterinarian in the audience!?"
  • Kaizo Trap: It is possible to die at the end of a chapter by touching the giant yarn ball and then taking fall damage. This will still count as clearing the chapter, however.
  • Not in My Contract: Prior to chapter 9: "My contract does not mention pain!"
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: Unlike in the other games in the series, here Bubsy has only one hitpoint.
  • Password Save: The game will give the player a six-digit password for every three chapters they clear, which allows them to start the game at the following chapter. Passwords do exist for every chapter, however.
  • Punny Name: Most of the chapters have punny names, such as "Fair Conditioning", "Beavery Careful" and "Claws for Alarm".
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: Upon seeing the chapter title "Eye of the Bobcat", Bubsy says: "That's it, I'm outta here, you can't make me...", and runs off the screen.
  • Shout-Out: Many of the chapter names are pun-based references to famous movies, such as The Good, the Bad, and the Woolies, A Fistful of Yarn, Lethal Woolie, and A Farewell to Woolies.
  • Squashed Flat: Falling from too great a height without gliding will cause Bubsy to splat on the ground like a pancake, costing him a life.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Bubsy drowns instantly upon falling in water.
  • Timed Mission: Every chapter grants the player ten minutes to clear it.
  • What Could Possibly Go Wrong?: Bubsy establishes his famous Catchphrase right at the start, as the first chapter is prefaced with him outright asking "What could possibly go wrong?" Between the game's unforgiving difficulty level and the high potential for Bubsy to get into slapstick, the correct answer is "a lot".
  • Who Writes This Crap!?: Bubsy doesn't always react positively to the punny chapter names. In particular, the chapter"Beavery Careful" outright prompts him to say "Hey, I didn't write this stuff!"
  • The Wild West: The third world is Wild West-themed, with Woolies wearing cowboy hats and part of the chapters taking part aboard moving trains.
