An international award for creators of the Fantasy genre, given annually at the World Fantasy Convention. It was created due to a perception that the Hugo and Nebula Awards (which nominally cover fantasy) were too focused on science fiction. It is now considered one of the three biggest awards in Speculative Fiction overall.
Unlike the other two awards, the World Fantasy Award is chosen by jury. The jury members are selected by the convention committee from the available pool of professionals working in the field—mainly writers and editors. Most of the nominees are also chosen by the jury, but two slots are reserved for nominations by convention members.
The award has been around since 1975.
