  • In Animal Crossing, if a villager isn't classically cute, it's ugly cute. It's that kind of game.
  • ARK: Survival Evolved: Aberration and Genesis II have the Bulbdog, a mutant creature which visually resembles a boggle-eyed and drooly cross between a toad, anglerfish, and pug, and acts like an excitable puppy.
  • The Avernum series has the GIFTS, a race of cheerful, childlike ditzes who all talk in squeaky voices and think you're really neat. And happen to be giant spiders.
  • Baldur's Gate III introduces Us the intellect devourer. Us is basically a brain on four terrifyingly clawed legs with tentacles sticking out of it, the voice of a child and the personality of a particularly friendly and eager puppy.
  • Banjo-Kazooie series:
  • In Beyond Good & Evil, heroine Jade's sidekicks are an obese, middle-aged Pig Man with dark, truly animal eyes, tusks, a hairy chest, and a propensity toward flatulence, and an out-of-it Top-Heavy Guy with a lumpy nose, strange, sideways mouth, and Big Ol' Eyebrows. They're also incredibly kind, sincere, and loving, and thus get a lot of love.
  • BioShock:
    • It helps that despite being one of the most dangerous common enemies, Big Daddies are also the only ones that don't actively attack you on sight.
    • The Little Sisters count too. Their eyes might be a solid, sickly, glowing yellow, but they're still cute.
      "Come on, Mr. Bubbles!"
  • Arakune from BlazBlue. He's basically a human-sized Eldritch Abomination / Blob Monster. Still, his little "face" (which has a more than passing resemblance to the Tachikomas') makes him eerily adorable.
  • Bloodborne: Over the course of the game, you find items that serve no purpose other than to play dress-up with the Messengers, ugly but benevolent little monsters that display messages and work as shopkeepers.
  • Tiny Tina from Borderlands 2 can be seen as this. Dirty, psychotic, and topped off with the series' signature, grungey stylistic suck; yet many find her darkly funny, charming and ultimately a traumatized woobie at heart.
  • Kouri in Brass Restoration finds the Ill-pin stuffed... characters adorable. They are based on viruses. Ryo, the main character, just doesn't see it.
  • Brütal Legend:
    • The Ground Urchins and Raptor Elks. Also the Metal Beasts, which happen to be giant Aztec panthers that can breathe fire.
    • The headbangers with their short, muscular bodies are at most comical. But in watching them interact and sometimes show off their own unique personalities, the player may start to grow a soft spot for them.
  • Chicory: A Colorful Tale: Basically every bug living in Grub Meadows, especially once Prunus joins you to help translate their screeches. Queen Drosera in particular is a giant centipede who looks like she would be a terrifying boss battle in any other action game, but instead she's a big softie who gushes about how adorable you are.
  • City of Heroes: The demons that can be summoned in the Demon Summoning power set have no skin, various skulls for faces, and are wreathed in fire (or ice). And yet, there is something undeniably cute about them. The demonlings especially, whose Idle Animation is to sit there wagging their tails.
  • The cutscene at the beginning of the first level of Clive Barker's Jericho features a prophetic dream in which the leader of an occult group speaks with a strange, blackened child like creature that speaks in a voice that wavers between a guttural growl and a pleasant child's voice. Creepy Cute as much as Ugly Cute. It also turns out to be the game's Big Bad.
  • The Ettins and Grendels from the Creatures series. The main Creatures, the Norns, are supposed to be cute. But the Ettins have lumpy, monkey-like bodies and strange red eyes, while the Grendels are nasty little reptilian critters with diseases and angry expressions. But when they display the same sort of helplessness as the Norns, well, it's hard not to love them.
    • Grorns too, with some of the adorable features of norns and the not so adorable features of grendels, are generally adorable anyway.
  • Some fans see Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony's Ryoma Hoshi as this. Sure, he has a strange, gonk-ish design, but despite his initial gruff demeanor, he's a very kind person and wants to find a reason to live and escape with the rest of his classmates. It helps that his eyes and cat-eared hat remind some fans of Garfield.
  • The loot bugs of Deep Rock Galactic. They're fat, six-eyed maggot/slug creatures that crawl around the caves of Hoxxes. And yet, with no natural predators, they are entirely passive, and they make "sad puppy" noises when the dwarves are nearby. A shame they eat nitra and gold, and drop a lot of it when killed, though the dwarves do admit to feeling bad about killing them to loot it.
  • Donkey Kong Country series:
    • Donkey Kong himself. He is a huge brawny gorilla who likes to showcase his strength, often sports a wide smile with large teeth, and has an arched forehead that gives his small eyes a perpetually angry look. Nevertheless, when not provoked, he is a sweet and fun-loving guy who greatly loves his friends, and has kept conquering the hearts of gamers for years.
    • Some of the baddies also qualify, particularly the Klaptraps with their cute little snaggle-teeth.
    • Squitter the Spider, one of the animal friends from the original trilogy. Spiders aren’t normally depicted as cute in media, but Squitter averts this by being pretty goofy-looking and adorable with his bulging eyes, buck teeth, and for wearing sneakers on all of his eight feet.
  • Webber from Don't Starve. He's a Half-Human Hybrid with a Giant Spider for a head and an Enemy to All Living Things other than spiders. However, this seems to be only because all other living things try to kill him, and personality-wise he's a sweet and innocent little boy.
  • Doom has some demons who look grotesque and cute at the same time.
  • From the world of Dragon Age:
    • Nugs look like the subterranean hybrid of rabbits and pigs. Although they're a tasty delicacy to the dwarves, some people apparently domesticate them; in fact, you can acquire a nug for Leliana, which she will name Schmooples. They are actually kind of cute, though their constant squeaking is a bit annoying to the point that Oghren will threaten to eat Schmooples.
    • Deepstalkers are also cute despite their horrible lamphrey-like mouths and their tendency to spit poison.
    • Ghasts from Dragon Age II seem to have been designed with this trope in mind. They're vile little gremlins with More Teeth than the Osmond Family, but they tumble out of their holes when they attack, make goofy noises during combat, and wear funny hats. They even flop over in a comical way when they die.
  • The entire Dragon Quest series of games is loaded with monsters like this thanks to Akira Toriyama doing the designs. If a monster isn't a Ridiculously Cute Critter, it's invariably one of these instead.
  • King Trode from Dragon Quest VIII, who is cursed into a chubby green orc.
  • The good ending of Eversion. Two Eldritch Abominations, together at last!
  • The Mr. Saturns in EarthBound (1994) and Mother 3 are comical big-nosed creatures with massive eyebrows and a single hair on their head, tied up with a red bow, and yet, their Wingdinglish and the "Boing"s, "Zoom"s and "Ding"s littered in their speech are both endearing.
  • The Elder Scrolls:
    • Morrowind:
      • Guars are a bi-pedal reptilian used by the native Dunmer as beasts of burden as well as for their hides, which are a valuable alchemical ingredient. They are also super cute looking.
      • Scamps are the weakest known form of lesser Daedra, and also the smallest, standing just over half the height of an average man. That said, they have gained some fans due to their "cuteness", particularly the Scamp merchant Creeper.
      • Rieklings, a blue-skinned race of humanoids native to Solstheim, stand only about half the height of an average man. Their diminutive size and gibberish language tends to get them the Ugly Cute treatment.
    • Skyrim:
      • Netch family from the Dragonborn DLC.
      • Rieklings return and are once again this. Despite their much more bestial appearance here than in Morrowind, they're referenced by some players as "ewoks of Skyrim".
  • The bogs from Elemental Story. They make good plushies (a pair of them were seen during the live battle stream event) and their sleeping looks during maintenance periods are adorable, but when they open their sharp mouths they look terrifying.
  • Some of the Blotlings from Epic Mickey, particularly the Spatters who get a neat little costume depending on what area you're in, and the chubby Spladooshes, who (as long as stay a safe distance or have befriended them) are perfectly content to sit there and sleep.
  • This was an intentional goal in the design of Factorio's insectoid aliens. As the game's primary threat, they need to look sufficiently creepy and menacing, but at the same time their large, expressive eyes are a reminder that they're not evil, just animals instinctively responding to what they perceive as a threat.
  • In Fallout 3, the bartender of Moriarty's Saloon, Gob.
    • His mother Carol, too. Despite being what are essentially sentient zombies, they're just so sweet and endearing!
    • There's also the Mole Rats. Especially Pumpkin.
    • Charon, also a ghoul, has quite the share of fangirls.
  • Fallout: New Vegas
    • The K9000 Cyberdog Gun and the Cyber K9s from Old World Blues.
    • Doesn't matter if they're trying to burn the player alive, Fire Geckos are cute.
    • Mole rats return with the addition of Snuffles, an injured tamed mole rat, in Sloan.
    • Baby Deathclaws. Look at those tiny horns! Who's a good murder lizard? You are! Yes, you— aaaaargh!
    • Spike from Old World Blues is a Deathclaw the size of a chihuahua and is as cute as one too!
    • "Animal Friend" makes many of the worst creatures the wasteland has to offer and tames them. Now you can walk right up to a pack of Nightstalkers and coo at how cute they are. Yao Guai, not so much...
  • Ghouls in Fallout 4 are now this, as opposed to their ghastly, zombie-like design in the previous games. Rather than looking necrotic and decayed, they are covered in scars caused by radiation burns but still resemble living humans, have no noses, and many of them have dark sclerae and irises that give their eyes a puppy-dog effect. It helps that most of the named ghouls you meet are also friendly and have endearing personalities, like Daisy and Kent in Goodneighbor, or the settlers living at the Slog.
  • Zombie Carl from MySims.
  • Many Final Fantasy monsters may qualify, but the Tonberry most of all; he may be one of the most dangerous random encounters around, but a diminutive fish-lizard-thing with a lantern somehow winds up being cute enough to sell plush toys.
  • The Vath in Final Fantasy XIV a race of what appears to be a mix of a beetle and horseshoe crabs. They aren't pretty to look at, but their child-like curiosity and mannerisms make them very endearing, making them a race of bugs that are in awe at new things.
  • Megalo from Fossil Fighters. It was deliberately designed to look like people thought dinosaurs used to look, so it's big, lumpy, gray, and dopey-faced. But it's that derpy expression that makes it so incredibly endearing.
  • Gish has this as its dominant aesthetic. The player and enemy characters have stylized round shapes and big eyes, which makes them oddly charming despite being neither brightly colored nor innocuous-looking.
  • The World Serpent in God of War (PS4) can dip into Unintentional Uncanny Valley with an odd-looking nose and human-like features but many find it endearing to see him relaxing and sleeping in the distant skyline.
  • Golden Sun: Dark Dawn gave the collectable Djinn more individual features, ranging from varied crests to bloated bellies to gaping black holes in various parts of their body that they suck enemies into. Because of their helpful nature when in speaking roles and many benefits once allied with you, they're widely considered endearing and adorable, and this at the worst.
  • Grim Fandango has Glottis. He's a massive demon with a jaw full of razor-sharp teeth, but he's so energetic and friendly that he manages to be adorable despite/because of it.
  • The headcrabs in Half-Life. Illustrated with Lamarr, the pet headcrab of Doctor Kleiner, who while de-beaked and harmless, will nonetheless try to swallow your skull. Valve even makes plushes of them, though the original version was decidedly cuter and less accurate than the current model.
    • The spore launcher weapon from Opposing Force also counts. It's an infant version of the shock trooper enemies, and is basically a giant alien tadpole. What makes it cute though, is the fact that you reload it by hand-feeding it as it eagerly chomps down the ammo you give it. One of its idle animations has Adrian Shepherd pat it as it happily pushes its head into your stroking palm.
  • Halo:
    • The short and stubby little Grunts. After awhile you just feel sorry for them, while admiring their pluck, and smiling at their silly dialogue, squeaky voices, and little dog-like huffs and growls.
    • The Engineers. They are essentially floating gas bladders with a long-necked head and tentacles sticking out, but they coo like small whales and shiver and recoil in fear from danger. They aren't the most attractive creatures, but they're Actual Pacifists who are the only passive enemies in the series and eventually you will start to feel bad for killing them.
  • Hellgate: London had pets, originally available to multiplayer subscribers only, that were intended this trope, and some players find them this way.
  • The creatures of Jade Cocoon 2 quickly grow on you.
  • The Dream Eaters in Kingdom Hearts 3D are either this or the standard sort of cute (The Meow Wow being the prime example of the former). If their appearance doesn't get you to find them cute, then their downright adorable reactions to being pet and fed most likely will.
  • Kirby:
    • Marx plays with this trope. His standard form averts the trope entirely due to being more traditionally cute, but once he enters his true form, he plays it straight with his cross-eyed expression, fangs, and radiant wings. This form's later appearances in Kirby Star Allies and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate downplay the trope in two different ways: in the former, the "cute" is played up, but in the latter, the "ugly" is played up. Interestingly, Marx Soul from Ultra averts the trope by being far scarier than before, especially with his death scream.
    • Sillydillo from Kirby and the Forgotten Land looks a little like Pinky with more than a few screws loose, but he manages to look oddly adorable despite it. Especially when he pulls out his papier-mâché armadillo dance partner and makes googly eyes at it. Phantom Sillydillo averts this trope, however.
  • Trico from The Last Guardian, who is officially designated as a griffin or sea eagle, but has elements of birds, rats, dogs, cats, and hyenas, with horns like that of a giraffe. The end result doesn't look like any specific creature in particular, which was intentional- the creators knew pet owners would recognize faults in Trico's behavior or appearance, had they made them a dog or cat.
  • League of Legends:
    • Kog'Maw, a little critter from the Void that spews acidic goo at things. Koggy is adorable in his little mutated way with mannerisms like a puppy, and if official plushies ever hit the merch store Kog'Maw is probably close to the top of the list.
    • Twitch as well. There's something oddly adorable about the derpy-eyed, crossbow-wielding, plague rat. Might be due to the resemblance to Scratt.
  • So many of the infected in Left 4 Dead fall under this category. The hunter falls under this especially when drawn in chibi style. The boomer looks like a chubby kid with bloated puss sacks and looks like he wants a cookie, the smoker even with his facial deformities, the tank with his humongous body and tiny head, and especially the witch who's basically a zombified Cute Monster Girl. Valve knows the creatures they made are cute. They even made plushies!
  • In some lights, Left 4 Dead 2's charger and jockey, especially because one looks like deformed hillbilly farmer and the other looks like a mentally-retarded dwarf on crack.
  • The Legend of Zelda:
    • In the The Legend of Zelda original game, a few of the dungeon bosses qualify for this trope, such as Aquamentus (the unicorn dragon...thing).
    • In The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, many of the transformed people dwelling in the Dark World are this in their cursed forms.
    • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:
      • There is the Stalchild enemy. They're supposed to look like creepy skeletons, but they look like goofy looking turtles instead.
      • Gorons too, especially when they refer to you as "brother" upon befriending you. Their leader, Darunia even names his future son after the player.
    • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess there's Yeto and Yeta.
      • While Yeto is a giant yeti, he also has a goofy face, a friendly personality, and his demonstrations of love to his wife Yeta are among of the sweetest moments in the game. The fact he speaks VERY LOUD ALL THE TIME gets less scary and more Adorkable as time goes by.
      • Despite being weird and rather disturbing in both appearance and manners, Zant still has a very clear Bishōnen aura hanging over him, an aura the fandom definitely have taken note of.
      • Midna refers to herself as a "hideous little imp", but is considered by fans to be Ugly Cute at worst, or even just plain cute.
    • Linebeck in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
    • Despite being the embodiment of evil, The Imprisoned from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword came off as this to a lot of people since it ended up looking like a Sesame Street character (at least until the arms, tail, and halo-thing come out).
      • Taken to another level in Hyrule Warriors, where the Imprisoned appears as a Giant Boss... and shrunken versions of the Imprisoned can appear as enemy captains. When they appear in Legend Mode, Linkle even admits that they look kind of cute (but acknowledges that they're still a threat).
      • From the same game, despite the formidable way the parasite Bilocyte infected poor Levias' body, the monster looks like a giant worm/frilled lizard hybrid with some traits of a puppy. Sounds weird, but it is actually quite adorable.
    • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild:
      • Patricia, a "sand seal" that basically looks like a walrus with a Mohawk and an intense facial expression. The cute part comes largely from her red hair bow and, according to Padda's translations, her penchant for "painful seal puns."
      • The Bokoblins in this game have a more overtly monstrous and inhuman appearance than in previous games. However, their large eyes and pig-like ears and snouts come across as more cute than threatening, not to mention how generally unimposing they are. And with the attention to detail given to them in this particular game, observing them simply doing their own thing out in the wild can be endearing. The in-game description of the Bokoblin Mask even describes it as being "almost charming in a cute, monstrous kind of way". This sentiment was pushed by Nintendo for some promotions; not only were they sold as a plush, they're the only enemy in the game besides the Guardian Stalker to get their own amiibo.
    • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom:
      • Yona of the Zora. A woman with a very flat, very broad head resembling a manta ray as well as Scary Teeth wouldn't usually be considered cute. Her design nevertheless manages to pull it off. It helps that she has a sweet personality, coordinating efforts to wash the sludge away from Zora's Domain and using her Healing Hands on those poisoned by it.
      • The Horriblins with their Gag Noses essentially look like oversized proboscis monkeys, which combined with the chittering noses they make when knocked to the ground make them surprisingly cute considering they're dangerous monsters like their Bokoblin relatives.
  • Gizmo, the Final Boss from Lil' Monster. It's a fanged, leathery, winged abomination... in an adorable chibi-package! (Doesn't hurt that it's an Infinity +1 Sword-mon.)
  • The little robot in Machinarium is made of rusty scrap metal and grunts to communicate, but is still absolutely adorable. The fact that he is a Woobie definitely aids the cute factor.
  • Mass Effect:
    • Urz, a tame varren (a.k.a. "fishdog") in Mass Effect 2. Unlike most of his species, Urz will allow you to pet him, and if you feed him some pyjak meat, he will happily follow you around Tuchanka, bounding like a puppy.
    • Thane manages to look like a rotting fish with the voice of a rusty lawn mower and still being a highly attractive man. Of course, Thane was deliberately designed to be exotically alien but attractive to female players.
    • Garrus is a much better example of this trope, especially after his scarring, considering female Shepard can engage in some good-natured teasing of him for being ugly (which doesn't stop you from being able to romance him). He's also considered The Woobie both in-game and in the fandom.
    • The elcor.
    • Krogan, particularly their infants.
    • Grunt, a teeange (technically newborn) Optional Party Member who views Shepard as something of a surrogate parent figure.
  • The title character of The Maw. It's an Extreme Omnivore Miracle-Gro Monster with rows of sharp teeth and one eye. As it grows bigger it's happy chuckling become sinister-sounding laughter. Despite it all it's a cowardly creature who follows the alien player character Frank around like a little puppy and is always happy to eat, and the hug between Frank and Maw's massive eyeball at the end is utterly d'awww-inducing. Think of A Boy and His Blob if The Blob was an Eldritch Abomination.
  • Medievil and Playstation All Stars Battle Royale has Sir Daniel, pictured above.
  • The Mars People in Metal Slug. Especially in 6, where they salute the player. Awww...
  • Metroid:
  • Minecraft's Creepers. Deformed pig model that's green and aptly-named, but is absolutely adorable. Same goes with the Striders in 1.16
  • Monster Hunter:
    • Monster Hunter (2004):
      • There's a small Wyvern called the Yian Kut-Ku. It has an oversized head, disproportionate ears, and is generally very much non cute. However, perhaps due to its clumsy running and falling down, his cheerful screechings and his beak feeling similar to a smiling face when open, there are few players who haven't ended up feeling some kind of odd fondness for the guy, and he's a prime target of fanart.
      • Similarly, the monster Khezu may look like a cross between an oversized maggot and male genitalia, but that doesn't stop fanartists to draw adorable little chibi versions of it. It doesn't help that some of the cutest female armor sets in the game are made of Khezu material.
    • The Mini Uragaan in Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) and Ultimate has gained special fondness from players because of this. And its unique, cheerful battle theme, too.
  • Within the Monster Rancher universe, the patron saint of this trope is probably the Color Pandora. It is a strange, vaguely caterpillar-esque monster with freaky human faces on its separated body segments... that makes high, squeaky noises and does cute acrobatic tricks. In-universe, it's hailed as a shining example of how to cooperate. Out-of-universe, its Ugly Cuteness gives it a surprising number of fans. In Monster Rancher 3 however, it's given a more generically cute design.
  • In the Mortal Kombat series, fans agree that Mileena would be smoking hot, if not for her Tarkatan face and the rows of razor-sharp teeth lining her maw. Mortal Kombat X changes things with Mileena's new design: her teeth are still quite prominent, but she now also has a fully functional pair of human lips, similar to how she appeared in Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Mortal Kombat 11 scaled her back to being lipless, though.
  • Many of the mushroom people in Mushroom Men, especially the hero, Pax. Sure, he's got beady little eyes, a raggedy-looking "lost boy" style tunic, and his mushroom cap breaks away to reveal his brain... But just watch the intro, where poor little Pax is wandering all by himself in the big scary human world, glowing eyes looking out innocently.
  • Post-transformation Emil from NieR is a character whose design straddles a surprisingly fine line between being considered vaguely cute and being considered downright horrifying (and for some people succeeds at being both simultaneously). Add in his sunny disposition and penchant for being a bit of a childish romantic and you now have a surprisingly adorable pseudo-mascot... with a grin that will still make people deeply uncomfortable.
  • Oddworld is FULL of this trope. Protagonists Abe and Munch deserve special mention.
    • Some of Stranger's living ammo and the Grubbs also qualify.
    • Paramites are vicious spider-like creatures with a hand for a face. Strangely, they look oddly adorable.
  • The minions of Overlord were created specifically to evoke this trope. They look like goblins or the Gremlins, but act like Ax-Crazy little children, loyal to a fault to their overlord and eager to earn his praise. Watching them run back to give you some of the loot they found is adorable. Or watching them grab an item (such as a pumpkin or a dead rat) and use it as equipment (in this case, a hat). Even more so in Overlord II when they sing and say adorable stuff to their mounts.
  • Pikmin: A lot of the enemies, like the toady bloyster, ranging bloyster, dweevils, and even the emperor bulbax with its little eyes and flopping tongue.
  • Pirate101 Has several examples among the pets that players can get, but the standout is the Grimtooth Reaper, a demonic shark that can swim through air, with a skin pattern that makes it look skeletal, and dark red vapor coming out of it's fins and gills. Yet it still manages to look huggable, as long as you're on it's good side.
  • The zombies in Plants vs. Zombies. Wall-eyed, lopsided, with snaggle teeth and endearingly Narm-y voices. They've been very successfully merchandised as a result of this trope, with several sets of plushies and vinyl figures. Standouts include the Imps, by virtue of being Fun Size with high-pitched voices. Another is the Space Cadet from Battle For Neighborville, who has the same googly eyes and Gonk-y appearance as other zombies, but is a bit smaller, is a girl and has Adorkable mannerisms.
  • A lot of Pokémon are this. Even more so in X/Y, where the Pokemon-Amie feature lets you play with your Pokemon and brings out the cuteness of a lot of species that most wouldn't think of as being cute at a first glance.
    • One that comes to mind is Gible. Seriously, just look at it!
    • Especially Snubull and Granbull, two bulldog-based Pokémon that are said to be popular with women. In the anime, one even started acting like a Clingy Jealous Girl with Meowth (or was just obsessed with biting his tail).
    • Some of the Pokémon in the Ruby ROM hack, Pokémon Quartz, fall under this as well, surprisingly.
    • Feebas, a shabby little fish Pokémon, has a secret: if you feed it many, many Dry-flavoured (blue) Pokéblocks and level it up, it turns into something that is Beautiful All Along, the much-coveted Milotic.
    • Scraggy also counts, since it's a lizard who wears its shed skin as pants. And it's ridiculously lovable.
    • Considering that it's basically a chubby dinosaur who wears the skull of its dead mother, Cubone just radiates a "hug me" aura.
    • Larvitar has rough skin and a blank glare, but still manages to be endearing.
    • There's also Muk. He's a giant pile of toxic waste, but comes across as a fairly lovable blob.
    • There's also the baby Bug-type Pokémon. Most of them are based on squirming larvae that in real life you'd hit with a broom, thinking that an Eldritch Abomination was here to feed on your soul. But Game Freak managed to make them cute.
    • Joltik - it doesn't help that it's based on the jumping spider. Its evolution Galvantula is pretty cute too despite being a spider, especially looking at adorable artwork such as this. D'awwwwwww...
    • Stunfisk, in all of its derpiness, could also qualify, as well as Magikarp.
    • Spinarak. It's a spidernote  the size of a human baby, and it's disarmingly adorable. Pokémon GO even renders it like a plush.
    • There are also plush toys based on chibi versions of many of the Pokémon, many of which can be considered ugly-cute, including Darkrai and both forms of Giratina.
    • Goomy, to the point of Memetic Mutation.
    • Ambipom. Its unusual appearance can be part of its charm.
    • You probably wouldn't expect a Pokemon based on volcanic remains to be utterly adorable, but Heatran certainly fits the bill. With its derpy, bulldog-like face, its surprisingly high-pitched cry, and the fact that it was the first legendary to be introduced that can be either male or female, it's hard not to fall in love with the cute, melty lava guy.
    • Trubbish is literally a walking trashbag with trash limbs, but just look at it!
    • Dunsparce is a weird chubby snake with angel wings and a drill tail but still has a pretty dedicated fanbase and even plushies.
    • Pokémon Sun and Moon introduces Mimikyu, a Ghost-Fairy type that tries to emulate Pikachu by using a cloth poorly fashioned to look like a Pikachu. Its drawn-on "face" looks like a child scribbled it on, and its actual eyes peek out of the torso of its rag-disguise. However, its doll-like appearance and status as The Woobie make it just as much of a Ridiculously Cute Critter as the Pokemon it's trying to pass off as.
    • The Mareanie line is also very cute. Even losing the Cute Little Fangs in exchange for a Jagged Mouth does not really change that.
    • Gligar is a flying scorpion-bat with a huge stinger and claws. Perhaps these exaggerated features contribute to its charm, as well as its big eyes, its treatment of Ash in the anime, and its expressive tongue.
    • Pyukumuku is based on a sea cucumber, and its signature trait is turning its digestive tract inside-out. Its name is even a portmanteau of "cucumber," "puke," and "mucus." However, it has curious little eyes and a round, pudgy shape. They're also very friendly in-game, turning around to look up at the player character when you talk to them (insomuch as you can talk to a sea cucumber anyway).
    • Feraligatr and Swampert can also count, considering that one of them basically looks like an adult Totodile and the other one is a derpy mudskipper.
  • Portal 2: PotatOS. On one hand, she's really just an old potato with a few wires and a light that blinks when she speaks. On the other hand though, she looks kinda adorable in a very, very weird way. What also helps is that GLaDOS starts acting more and more human the longer she's stuck in the potato, losing her Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable and Creepy Monotone and gaining a lot more emotion in her voice, even when the situation isn't potentially lethal.
  • Psychonauts: The art style may look a little off-putting, but the characters make up for it in terms of their personalities.
    • Dogen Boole has small, beady eyes and a jaw that juts out of his face, but he's a sweet (if absentminded) boy.
    • Sheegor has wild hair, a slightly creepy face and is a hunchback, but she's a sympathetic minion who just wants to be reunited with her pet turtle.
  • Rayman's Raving Rabbids. As well as Moskito from the first Rayman game.
  • The art style of Sam & Max: Freelance Police produces a lot of these characters. The Soda Poppers are an example Gone Horribly Wrong, but fortunately the game lends opportunities to abuse them every time they appear.
  • Amigo from Samba de Amigo could count as this. He has a square head, a perpetual smile with crooked teethnote , and an overall goofy cartoon-like appearance that's kind of ridiculous. That being said, he's still a Ridiculously Cute Critter. There are some people who think he's creepy, though, possibly since the way his expressions change (or don't change, in many cases) seems kind of Unintentional Uncanny Valley.
  • The Colossi from Shadow of the Colossus. Some of them are hard to kill just because they look so cute and pathetic.
  • Silent Hill has the Larval Stalkers in the first game, which have no face and are almost entirely invisible. Harry will still aim his gun at them or hold his Pipe at them, and Silent Hill is one of the few games to still follow the "if it moves, kill it" rule. Naturally you just aim and empty a clip into whatever you're aiming at, but the radio still gives off static. Some people stopped in their tracks simply to watch the little child-like manifestation bumble around and fall over a few times, before finally disappearing.
  • The alien spawn from The Sims 2 tend to turn out this way. Some players might disagree (and there are hacks out there to have the aliens be more conventionally cute) but the bug-eyed, no nosed green babies are adorable.
    • The products of "Breed Ugly Sims" challenge games frequently end up in Hollywood Homely territory, being strange-looking but still very attractive (largely due to averting Only Six Faces). The truly ugly ones, however, are inevitably this trope, and consequently no less popular.
    • Also Nervous Subject, who is extremely gaunt, with a mohawk haircut, almost no upper lip and small, downturned eyes. Players often sympathize with him due to his Hilariously Abusive Childhood and the fact that he dreams of having a family of his own despite being trapped in his family's basement.
  • Arlo Bunch and Laurel Grisby from The Sims 3 (and their families) as well as many of the inhabitants of Twinbrook from The Sims 3: Ambitions.
  • Surprisingly, Painwheel from Skullgirls. Take a look at her without her mask on. She also appears maskless in the Story Mode endings of Filia and Valentine. When she smiles, she's creepy and adorable!
  • Sonic Adventure has Chaos, who is fought in multiple forms over the course of the game. A few of the forms can count as examples of this trope, but the best example is probably Chaos 6.
    • Some breeds of the Chao are also like this.
    • Another example from Sonic are the alien slugs in Shadow the Hedgehog. Antennae, a single eye, a goopy slug body. Some fans insist they're adorable; others find them disgusting.
    • Froggy and Motobug.
    • Classic Eggman. Initially averted outside of Japan, as Western localizations and media adaptations redesigned him to look less cute and more grotesque.
    • Some of Dark Gaia's minions in Sonic Unleashed (Spike, Little Rex, Red Rex, Dark Fright, Red Fright, Dark Bat, Dark Bat Sniper, and Thunder Bat) fall into this trope. They may look freakish, but the behavior of both the Little Rex and Red Rex make them especially endearing.
  • Splatoon:
    • Downplayed with the playable characters. While the Badass Adorable Inklings look mostly normal in their humanoid forms, their Cute Little Fangs include an extra one in the front bottom tooth. While meant to emulate squid beaks, it also makes them appear in dire need of braces. The playable Octolings introduced in Splatoon 2 are just as cute and also have fangs meant to invoke real-life octopus beaks, though they're arranged asymmetrically, with their bottom and top fangs on opposite sides of the mouth, making them also look in need of some dental work.
    • Most Octarians are tentacles with eyes, mouth, and legs, making them look outright Gonk-ish. However, basic one-tentacled troops can sometimes be seen covering the ground in front of them in ink with a goofy smile on their faces. It manages to look kind of adorable.
    • Pearl from Splatoon 2. With her Forehead of Doom and snaggleteeth (in addition to the three fangs Inklings normally have), she's definitely a lot uglier than most Inklingsnote . For some, though, that's all part of her charm.
    • The Salmonid Smallfry have toothy maws, ragged attire, and googly eyes, but there's something about them that makes them look adorable. This may be why you have one as a "little buddy" in Splatoon 3.
    • C. Q. Cumber from Octo Expansion is a sea pig, a type of sea cucumber from the deep sea (home to some of the more frightening sea creatures), and not even an anthropomorphic one like the other Denizens of the Deep. But he looks like a cross between a tiny sea slug and a gummy worm and wears a tiny conductor's hat that can be worn by your player character.
  • The baby forms of most aliens you can make in Spore tend to be like this. Sometimes the adult forms can be, too.
  • The Gnorcs from Spyro the Dragon (1998) are a race of Cartoon Creature monsters that act as the primary mooks of the game. They are large and vaguely frog-like, the cartoonish-style and limited graphical capabilities of the era making them come across as rather adorable, a design choice they chose to keep for Spyro: A Hero's Tail. Averted in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy remake, where the improvement in graphics make them look more like traditional orcs.
  • Many of the Zerg creatures from the original StarCraft fit this trope. The little Zerglings are quite cute on the screen, and way they pounce on the Terrans like kittens at a ball of yarn only makes them cuter. All of the wild creatures also apply, being horribly proportioned beasts that look cute in spite of it.
    • Banelings. Bloated little monstrosities, with the entire back two-thirds of their body devoted to a bunch of pulsating sacs of acidic pus. Before the speed upgrade is evolved, they get around via an ungainly waddle; after the speed upgrade, they tuck themselves into balls and roll around. Their fate is to run or roll into a mass of infantry and explode. They're adorable.
    • Remember the Ragnasaur found on Char? Big forlorn orange eyes, irritated groan whenever you poke it...
  • Quite a few of the animals in Star Wars: The Old Republic both hostile and otherwise. A good example would be the Empire Balmoraa World Boss, which is an Ancient Bormu. Bormu are like Hippo-Caterpillars.
  • Blanka in Street Fighter appears frightening and intimidating at first glance (and don't be mistaken: if you're a bad guy, he is), what with being a muscle-bound green-skinned beast man and all, but deep down he's just a sweet guy who loves his mom and his friends Dan and Sakura. Just look at him hugging his mother in his ending in all iterations of Street Fighter II. Street Fighter V even has a story gag where he gets turned into a mascot character.
  • Most of the enemies from the Super Mario Bros. series games like Goombas and Boos. Yes, even Bowser.
  • A lot of the monsters in the 3D Tales Series games are of this nature if they aren't just standard cute things.
  • Undertale:
    • Endogeny the amalgamate. Made out of innumerous dogs, has a hole for a face and shakes like a madman when pet. Despite being a Body Horror monster, it still acts like the other dogs. Playing fetch with it ends the battle immediately, you spare it by petting, and its theme song? Dogsong, altough it starts creepy, it ends up at normal speed. Its outcome at the True Pacifist ending is also no less cuter. It turns out to be the parents of the other dogs!
    • Sans and Papyrus aren't exactly cute, being skeletons, but they're both so goofy it's hard not to love them.
  • Swampy and his Sewer Gator buddies from Where's My Water?.
  • Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap: Book's animals forms are this in the 2017 remake's HD graphisms.
  • World of Warcraft:
    • One of the non-combat pets available is a baby version of a Beholder-like demon. It's a floating head with one huge eye and small stubby tentacles. It also drools a lot and randomly falls asleep. It's at the same time very ugly and absolutely adorable. Said Beholder-like demon is also named Sleepy Willy, or simply Willy. Here's some screenshots of the little fella.
    • The Disgusting Oozeling, a pet that's essentially a small blob of slime.
    • The Core Hound Pup. It's a sort of two-headed baby bargain-basement Cerberus with lava for skin...that plays with a chew toy.
    • The Oracles are a race of sort of ugly frog-like creatures that have very cute speech. Now in hideously adorable pet form.
    • Murky in any of his various guises. Or any of the other vanity pets.
    • Broken draenei.
    • Baby Murlocs. All together now.
    • Behold, Gory, the Abomination. A giant golem made of rotted flesh and organs with bone and metal sticking out of him and an stomach that hangs open and exposes his innards...who only wants to be a farmer and tells you so with an innocent, childlike enthusiasm.
    • Battle for Azeroth gives us crawgs, the corrupted spawn of Krag'wa the frog loa that resemble baby demogorgons. Even more adorable in companion pet size, called - fittingly enough - Dart.
  • Most characters from Yume Nikki are really creepy when you first see them, but when you get used to them, some of 'em are kind of... adorable. Like Uboa. Happiest-looking Eldritch Abomination ever.
    • And Masada seems to be a strange sort of Mr. Fanservice, judging by parts of the fandom, and is also often seen as a Woobie.
    • If you search on DeviantArt, it's easy enough to find quite a few pictures of fan-made Uboa plushies. Yes, that's right, people like to cuddle with Uboa.
    • Little Monoko, aka the cutest freak of nature you've ever seen.
