  • All-Star Cast: While the anime's animation quality leaves much to be desired, they went all out with the voice actors. Japanese castings took further care in placing prominent veterans and or contemporary high profile actors as most mid-to-top tier B-Rank, and A-Rank squad captains with newer actors as squad mates.
  • Animation Bump: Toei Animation gave the project an obvious department shift to a more seasoned team of animators starting from Season 2; leading to quality improvements in overall direction, character designs, cinematography, and action execution.
  • Art Evolution: Subtle—you likely won't notice unless you compare chapters side by side—but the beginning of the series had a slightly more blocky style. (Also, as the mangaka himself admits, characters who were small/looked young at the start have gotten even smaller/younger-looking as time goes on.)
  • Breaking News Interruption:
    • The sixth episode of the second season of the anime was pre-empted for coverage of the 2021 Fukushima earthquake.
    • The third season's 14th episode was pre-empted for coverage of a tsunami that was slated to hit Japan.
  • Creator's Favorite: Ashihara has admitted that Kitora is one of his favourites, personality-wise and also being one of the easiest characters to draw.
  • The Danza: Yūichi Jin voiced by Yūichi Nakamura.
  • Executive Meddling: According to editor Akira Jean-Baptiste Hattori, the early chapters were not very popular with the readers of Jump, so Ashihara was advised to introduce Jin ahead of schedule and answer some of the mysteries he intended to reveal much later in the story. This turned out to be a wise decision, because the developments were well received and caused the popularity of the work to improve.
  • Flip-Flop of God: It hasn't happened yet, but on the Border Enlistment Period graph, Ashihara admits that he might end up changing his mind on some of those enlistment times.
  • Missing Episode: The English Dub skips the anime original Fugitive Arc entirely.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: The series once ran a contest for fans to submit taglines, with the winning ones used in official posters and the paper bands around physical volumes.
  • Portmanteau Series Nickname: Watori, or WorTri.
  • Playing Against Type: Big time in the Latin American Spanish dub with Yûma Kuga's voice actress, Jennifer Medel, which is normally well-known on voicing cute little girls or boys, like Happy or Lillie, being Yûma a quite departure on such roles, as her voice sounds incredibly deep and male-sounding, causing many people to think that he was voiced by a male kid voice actor instead.
  • Schedule Slip: Starting in 2015, Ashihara took a break from publishing a chapter every four to five weeks due to the pain from the cervical spondylosis he developed in his neck. The series was transferred to Jump Square in December 2018 after a two year hiatus, where he publishes anywhere between 0 to 2 chapters each month depending on his health.
  • Series Hiatus: The series went on a 2-year hiatus from late 2016 - late 2018, due to the author's health.
  • Spoiled by the Merchandise: When the manga returned from hiatus, the anime studio drew celebratory art—including Hyuse in his Tamakoma uniform, an event that had yet to happen in the anime.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In the Border Briefing File, Ashihara reveals that he was initially going to write a sports manga before his editor encouraged him to come up with something more creative. He came up with a battle shonen where powers were freely transferrable between anybody the same way skills could be learned by any player in a sports manga, and the sci-fi "Triggers" were devised to support this concept.
    • Ken Satori was originally intended to be a beautiful guy that ladies would swoon over for, but it ended up as a Comedic Relief since Arashiyama already covered that role.
    • Mitsuru Tokieda was also meant to be more conventionally attractive, but Ashihara grew fond of his sleepy eyes look.
  • Word of God: Ashihara frequently answers questions on Twitter that are then compiled into the volume releases. There's also Border Briefing File, though in the afterword he mentions that fans should interpret the info in whatever way they find most enjoyable. Also, this exchange:
Q: Did Tachikawa-san's eyes become grid-shaped because he burned the mesh for grilling his beloved mochi into his eyes?
