- Dawson Casting: Given the harsher living conditions of the late middle ages, actors are generally older than their characters by some margin to more effectively convey where the historical figures were in their life expectancy.
- Mark Rylance was older than Cromwell by about 10 years; Cromwell begins the story in his 40s. As the series spans roughly a decade, he does match more closely by the end.
