- Science Marches On: The play was originally performed in 1999 and as a result, Vivian's fate is completely inexorable. Had it been set in the present day, Vivian probably would have been able to get tested for the faulty breast cancer gene
, which has also been linked to ovarian cancer. Her mum's death would have been a red flag. It still might not have been enough to save her life or stop her from becoming ill, but she would have at least had a warning and would have been able to take some preventative steps.
