Trivia / Willow (2022)

Go To

For the 1988 film's trivia, see here.

  • Actor-Shared Background: The series reveals that Madmartigan and Sorsha married, then had two children after the events of the film. Similarly, actors Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley also married after they met on the film set. They had two children, a son and a daughter like their characters, before divorcing.
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: Ron Howard and Warwick Davis were happy to be reunited on Solo: A Star Wars Story and were eager to make a sequel to the 1988 film. It eventually happened, with Howard as executive producer.
  • Channel Hop: The original film was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayernote . For the TV series, distribution was instead handled by Disney with their purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012, which granted them the rights to the IP.
  • Dawson Casting: During a banquet in the first episode, Sorsha says that "200 moons" have passed since Queen Bavmorda's defeat. Assuming that 1 moon = 1 month as it does roughly on Earth, then only 16 years and 8 months have passed In-Universe since the events of the film, meaning Elora Danan is only 16 years old, and the twins Kit and Airk are 15 years old. The actors playing them were 24, 23 and 25 respectively during filming of the first season. Either this trope is in play, Writers Cannot Do Math, the 200 is only an approximation, or months in their world last a little longer than 28 days.
  • Development Gag: In episode 4, when Willow recalls how during the events of the movie Bavmorda turned an entire army into pigs, he describes the situation as pure chaos. That scene was indeed very problematic to film since the pigs were difficult to control.
  • Fake American: An accent version. Ellie Bamber, an English actress, plays Elora/Dove with an American accent for some unexplained reason.
  • Fan Community Nicknames: Questies.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Since the series was made as a Disney+ exclusive, its May 2023 removal from the service left its fans with no official way to watch it.
  • On-Set Injury: Ralph Ineson slipped over on a staircase and dislocated his shoulder while filming a nighttime fight scene in July 2021. He ended up suing Disney for damages in late 2023, with his lawyers stating the shoulder injury was severe enough that it prevented Ineson from taking on other physically-demanding roles and alledging that the crew bear responsibility for the injury because the set wasn't properly prepared for safe filming (partly due to pressures to meet production deadlines).
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Annabelle Davis plays Mims instead of Dawn Downing, due to the latter aging out of the role. In a similar vein, Ellie Bamber plays Elora instead of Ruth and Kate Greenfield.
    • Mark Slaughter and Sam Witwer play General Kael instead of the late Pat Roach. Downplayed, as some Stock Footage of Roach from the film was mixed in new scenes with Slaughter physically playing the role, with Witwer providing Kael's voice uncredited.
    • Jack Kilmer stands in for his father as the voice of Madmartigan when Kit hears what seems to be her father's voice speaking to her.
    • In the French dub, Jochen Hägele replaces Christian Bénard as Willow from the 1988 film.
    • The 1988 film was dubbed into Latin American Spanish at the now-defunct Intersound in Los Angeles. For this series, it was instead dubbed at Mexico City's Grande Studios, and everyone was inevitably re-cast. For example, Willow, voiced by Juan Alfonso Carralero in the film, is now voiced by Roberto Gutiérrez.
    • In the Japanese dub, Takeshi Kusao, Maki Izawa and Taisuke Nakano replace Kei Tomiyama, Kazue Takahashi, and Takashi Taniguchi as Willow, Bavmorda and Madmartigan, respectively.
    • In the Italian dub, Franco Marnella takes over for the late Gaetano Varcasia as Willow.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Kit (played by queer actress Ruby Cruz) and Jade (whom lesbian actress Erin Kellyman plays) are both confirmed as in love with each other.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Both of Warwick Davis's children have roles in this series. Annabelle Davis plays Willow's daughter Mims, and Harrison is Willow's stunt double.
    • Val Kilmer's son Jack Kilmer voices Madmartigan.
  • Role Reprise:
  • Screwed by the Network: Disney announced that the show would be removed from Disney+ on May 26, 2023, only about six months after it was released. The announcement itself came only one week before the intended removal date and shocked many people in the industry, its creators included.
  • Sending Stuff to Save the Show: The series has a small but very dedicated and vocal fanbase who campaign to get it put back to streaming services and renewed after its cancellation and removal from Disney+.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Erin Kellyman (Jade) and Adwoa Aboah (Scorpia) play long-lost sisters. Both actresses are biracial and have similar enough looks that it's very plausible.
  • Sequel in Another Medium: A Disney+ streaming series serving as sequel to Willow, a theatrical film.
  • Sequel Gap: The series is a sequel that came out 34 years after the film's release. In-Universe, that number is divided in two, as it takes place 17 years after the events of the film.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Jon M. Chu was initially attached to the series, but stepped away due to COVID-related shifts in its production schedule and the impending birth of his third child. Chu noted that he was "heartbroken" over his decision to leave.
    • Val Kilmer, when he was told that 'The whole world wants Madmartigan back' he answered 'Not as much as I do.'. He kept training in his golden years, and thus was still physically strong, yet his fight against throat cancer left him nearly voiceless, and unable to take the role. He hasn't been ruled out for a hypothetical Season 2 that being said, with options such as a voice synthesizer similar to the one used to replicate the voice of James Earl Jones in Obi-Wan Kenobi (he uses one such in real life). His son Jack, who possesses a similarly deep voice, steps in for him.
    • Cailee Spaeny was originally cast as Kit, before being replaced by Ruby Cruz due to scheduling conflicts.
  • Word of Gay: Wendy Mericle, writer of "The Battle of the Slaughtered Lamb" confirmed that her intention behind the woodswomen Hubert and Anne was that they are indeed a couple (in fact, married), as it had been implied. Almost no one in the fandom had thought otherwise about them.
