Trivia / Wayside

Go To

  • Adored by the Network: Unlike the United States, Canada has shown extreme love for the series ever since it premiered, and it continues to rerun on various TV channels even after ending such a long time ago.
  • Channel Hop: Reruns of the show in Canada bounced all over the place. First Teletoon aired reruns for a few years (and concurrently airing on the Canadian Nickelodeon), then reruns moved to YTV for a few years and it aired on Disney Channel in 2021.
  • Children Voicing Children: Todd is voiced in the Pilot Movie by a younger Michael Cera. His VA for the series proper, Mark Rendall, also qualifies.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: In the Pilot Movie, Mrs. Jewls is voiced by Kathy Najimy.
  • Cowboy BeBop at His Computer: Thanks to The Mysterious Mr. Enter, its not uncommon to hear people state the series was created by Teletoon rather than Nelvana when in actuality, Teletoon simply commissioned and funded the show’s production (they don’t even have an in-house animation studio). Even This Very Wiki was guilty of this, with the proper corrections not being made until 2021! However, given that both Teletoon and Nelvana are owned by Corus Entertainment, some might not see it as that big of a stretch.
  • Disowned Adaptation: A fan artist stated that the author of the original Wayside School books (Louis Sachar) didn't particularly like the series. She did mention that, despite his feelings towards the series, he did like the animation and designs, and when he saw the artist's drawing of Louis (his Author Avatar from the books/show), he remarked "Well, he certainly takes after me".
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The second season itself didn't receive a DVD release.
    • The entire series is on Corus Entertainment's "Keep It Weird" YouTube channel.
  • The Other Darrin: As mentioned above, the pilot movie has Michael Cera as the voice of Todd and Kathy Najimy as the voice of Mrs. Jewls, while in the series they're voiced by Mark Rendall and Kathleen Laskey.
  • Screwed by the Network: Nickelodeon gave the show some decent advertising and a decent timeslot when the show first came out (despite premiering it at the end of the American school year), before screwing around with its timeslot and ultimately shoved it to the side before its cancellation (though it did premiere the Christmas episode as part of the 2007 Christmas celebrations).
  • What Could Have Been: Allegedly, one of the earliest plans for a Wayside cartoon would have been an anthology series hosted by Paul Reubens, in-character as Pee-wee Herman, but the idea was scrapped, with most of the ideas that were planned for the adaptation being reused for Pee-wee's Playhouse.
