  • Science Marches On: The book makes an offhand mention of a 1985 discovery of five planets around Barnard's Star, with one of the planets being Earth-like. This was not quite an unreasonable assumption at the time of the book's publication, due to astronomer Peter van de Kamp's claims of having observed the star being perturbed by its own planets. However, said claims were ultimately refuted, and as of 2023 it is unknown whether or not Barnard's Star has any planets.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • There were plans to write a sequel depicting the state of the rest of the world, but instead Strieber started writing about The Greys.
    • Before the novel was even published, the rights to film it were purchased by producer Keith Barish in late 1983. The film version would have been directed by Greek-French director Konstantinos Gavras. The film ultimately never materialized.
  • Write Who You Know: The main characters are fictionalized versions of the authors.
