It was later announced in September 2021 at the Toronto Film Festival is that principal photography will commence in Boston in January 2022 with Ivan Reitman returning to direct with Schwarzenegger and DeVito reprising their roles with Tracy Morgan replacing Murphy as their long lost triplet brother. However, Reitman's death five months later in February 2022 and his son Jason turning down the offer to continue his work on the sequel as confirmed by Schwarzenegger in a May 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly leaves the fate of the project uncertain.
