- Reality Subtext: Many thought the bombing that begins the film looked uncomfortably close to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, which while three years on, was still on the public's minds considering the horribleness of the crime and the conviction of Timothy McVeigh less than a year before. While a longer passage of time than usual, still could be thought of as a Too Soon.
- The film was also scheduled to make its network broadcast debut on September 15th, 2001. After the terrorist attacks on September 11th, the Fox network understandably cancelled the plan to show this movie.
- What Could Have Been: The film was originally conceived as a Grand Finale for the series, and had to be hastily rewritten when word came that the show would continue. This is why the Cigarette Smoking Man arrives at Antarctica but then leaves without doing anything.
