• Word of God: David Simon confirmed that Richard Price, who wrote the episode, came up with the idea of Gus Triandos as someone Herc would think of (see Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today? on the main page), and Simon (though he thought it was hysterical) momentarily panicked when he found out Triandos was still alive, but when he contacted Triandos and sent him the script, Triandos understood the humor and was okay with it.
