    • The RWBY character Velvet Scarletina is based on the Velveteen Rabbit.
    • Bewilderment: Theo once read The Velveteen Rabbit to his six-year-old son Robin, who told him two years later that the story had given him months of nightmares.
  • Science Marches On: Burning the personal effects of scarlet fever patients was common during the 1920s, but it's now known that scarlet fever is very unlikely to be spread that way. Also, the disease has been easily treatable since the 1940s thanks to the discovery of penicillin.
  • Technology Marches On: Soft toy animals today are almost invariably made of plush, not velvet (or velveteen), and stuffed with cotton, wool, or polyester fiber, not sawdust. Even within the book, the Rabbit's sawdust stuffing is considered "out-of-date," which is part of the reason why most of the other toys look down on him at first.
  • What Could Have Been: Was one of the stories Don Bluth wanted to adapt into an animated feature.
