  • Throw It In!: While mixing "A Sort of Homecoming", Brian Eno got frustrated and slowed the tape down. Bono heard it and improvised some vocals and lyrics, thinking he would replace them later. However, Eno and Daniel Lanois convinced the band to keep the song as it was. The result? "Elvis Presley And America".
  • What Could Have Been: "Pride (In the Name of Love)" was originally supposed to be about Ronald Reagan's Cold War rhetoric. But Bono read a book about the American civil rights movement, and began studying the differences between its peaceful (MLK) and violent (Malcolm X) paths in The '60s. Bono has subsequently said that the song, as it became, feels like an incomplete sketch.
