  • In the earliest drafts of Sword, Terry was planning to kill off every member of the party save for Shea. His editor wasn't impressed with their deaths, so all but Hendel ended up making it out alive. He did get to revisit the concept in Wishsong, in which nearly every member of Shea's great-grandson Jair's party is killed off towards the end.
  • In the years between Sword and Elfstones, a totally different Shannara sequel called, "Song of Lorelei" was written, following Menion Leah's son, Lorelei. Brooks' editor found it meandering and having almost No Ending to speak of, so it was ultimately scrapped.
