• Sequel Gap: This sequel comes out ten years after the original.
• Serendipity Writes the Plot: In the initial 2010 plot draft, the family relocated to the trailer park due to being evicted from their homes, an unfortunately common issue at the time due to the global recession. As the film lingered in Development Hell and the economy in the real world recovered, the story was changed to them visiting relatives instead.
• The Other Darrin: None of the actors who originally played the Strangers reprise their roles.
• What Could Have Been: In the early stages of production, Liv Tyler was going to reprise her role as Kristen from the original film. According to the early drafts of the script, it would have been revealed she survived the original film, however at the beginning of the sequel the Strangers track her down and she is murdered. Following years of development hell and revisions to the story, this was omitted from the final production.
