  • Technology Marches On: The Squares of the City was written in the 1960s and set at some point toward the end of the century, so this was probably inevitable. Portable computers that can be used wherever they're needed are rare and expensive; it's a sign of how important the protagonist's job is that he gets to use one. At one point, another character shows him the previous night's TV news, which she's recorded on a large and complicated device that records the television picture on film.
