Trivia / The Simpsons S3 E10 "Flaming Moe's"

Go To

  • Defictionalization: The Flaming Homer/Moe became real in the form of "Purple drank" aka "Sizzurp" in the 2000s.
  • The Other Marty: Catherine O'Hara was originally cast as Collette, but the writers felt her voice didn't quite fit the role and her entire voice track was replaced with the temp track recorded by Jo Ann Harris, an occasionally used voice actress in the early seasons.
  • Reality Subtext: When Sam Simon was asked if the premise of the episode was inspired by the tumultuous relationship between himself and Matt Groening, Simon acknowledged, "That may be true".
  • Wag the Director: In the original script, Moe tempted Aerosmith to play by offering them free beer, but the band members asked that the joke be changed, as they were newly sober. The writers changed the line to "free pickled eggs", which met with Aerosmith's approval. Also, one of their stipulations was that their A&R man John Kalodner be included.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • There was originally a joke in which a gay couple walked into "Flaming Moe's", assuming that it was a gay bar because of the name. Matt Groening felt that it was a good thing the joke was cut because he did not feel the writers should bring attention to the name. The joke would be reused for a later episode where Moe actually runs a gay bar, titled "Flaming Moe."
    • Originally, there was more to the subplot featuring Moe and Colette, but it was cut because the writers felt it did not work.
  • Write What You Know: Al Jean said that the opening two minutes of the episode were inspired by his own childhood where "My sister would have sleepover parties and her friends would always try to kiss me and stuff."
