- Awesome, Dear Boy: Tony Shalhoub agreed to be a part of this because he felt it was refreshing to be in a movie that humanized Arabs compared to most Americans movies.
- Fake Nationality:
- Maybe subverted into an Actor Allusion, as Samir Nazhde is played by French (you can hear it) -of Tunisian descent- actor Sami Bouajila, and even though he is Palestinian, Haddad suggests to deport him to Tunis (although there are Palestinians all over the Arab world now).
- Played with: the Lebanese-American agent Frank Haddad is played by Tony Shalhoub, who, although born in America, has Lebanese ancestry (his father Joseph was from Lebanon and immigrated to the US when he was 10, and his mother Helen was a second-generation Lebanese-American). His character immigrated to the US from Lebanon though.
- Life Imitates Art: Three years after the movie came out, 9/11 happened, with many parallels to the film. Edward Zwick was shocked of how his movie became reality and even cringes from seeing the image of the Twin Towers in the background of his own movie's poster.
- Playing Against Type: Tony Shalhoub, generally known as a goofy sitcom actor, here plays an angry, snarking FBI agent.
