  • Better Export for You: The US release replaces the generic CD label with a custom one depicting a stylized sunflower. The Japanese release similarly features a custom label depicting the band logo, and the first print run in the region adds the B-side "Tears Roll Down" as a bonus track.
  • Channel Hop: For this album, the band were moved to the newly-revived Fontana Records, which would last for just this album and their first Greatest Hits Album before moving back to Fontana's parent label, Mercury Records.
  • Cut Song: The track "Rhythm of Life" was demoed during the album's sessions, but was ultimately left off the final product. It would ultimately be given to guest singer Oleta Adams, who'd record her own rendition for her 1990 album Circle of Life, while the original Tears for Fears demo would surface on the 2020 Super Deluxe Edition.
  • Saved from Development Hell: The Super Deluxe Edition box set was originally slated for release in 2015 (and indeed, the remaster on the first disc notes that it was made in 2015), but it didn't come out until 2020, in part because the album's mix is so complicated that it took veteran Progressive Rock producer Steven Wilson an unusually long time to create a satisfactory surround sound remix. Wilson commented in the album liner notes that one of the songs was "quite simply the most complicated mix I've ever undertaken", but it probably wasn't the song you'd expect: it was actually "Year of the Knife".
  • Troubled Production: The album's making was unusually prolonged as a result of the band's search for a denser, more organic sound on it, having grown disillusioned with their initial Synth-Pop direction. The band went through several producers for the album before finally settling on Dave Bascombe, and the arrangements were so complex that "Sowing the Seeds of Love" alone reportedly took several weeks to mix. The album reportedly cost £1 million to put together, and Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith wrestled with Creative Differences, lifestyle differences, and personal troubles all the while, ultimately resulting in Smith quitting the band in 1991.
  • Working Title: Famous Last Words was considered for the album title before settling on The Seeds of Love (after "Sowing the Seeds of Love"); according to Roland Orzabal, the initial name was a reflection on his and Curt Smith's concern that it might be their final album as Tears for Fears, owed to a Troubled Production that had severely strained the duo's relationship.
