- Fatal Method Acting: Barely averted. Meryl Streep nearly drowned while filming a rafting scene. The director pressured her into doing another take even though she said she couldn't handle it. After she was pulled out of the water she angrily confronted the director and told him "The next time I say I can't do something, I think we should believe me, don't you?".
- Irony as She Is Cast: Tom is supposed to be inexperienced when it comes to the outdoors, especially in comparison to his wife. In real life, David Strathairn is well-versed in the outdoors, and worked on boats.
- No Stunt Double: Meryl Streep did some of her own stunts.
- The Other Marty: Maurice Jarre originally scored the film, but his music was thrown out and Jerry Goldsmith brought on to write a replacement. He would also score the director's next project.
- Uncredited Role: Carrie Fisher was an uncredited script doctor on the film.
- What Could Have Been: Sam Neill turned down the role of Tom Hartman.
