Trivia / The Prince of Tides

Go To

  • Real-Life Relative: Barbra Streisand's son Jason Gould plays Bernard Woodruff.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The novel was recommended to Barbra Streisand by her then-boyfriend Don Johnson, who was a fan of the novel. She enjoyed it and planned to make it into a film, with Johnson in the Tom Wingo part. However by the time the film was in production, their romantic relationship had ended, which meant that Johnson was no longer attached to the role. Kevin Costner was also offered the role.
    • Streisand originally planned to cast Lloyd Bridges and Jeff Bridges, but the elder Bridges wasn't interested.
    • Chris O'Donnell won the role of Bernard, but Pat Conroy didn't think he was right.
    • Streisand initially hired John Barry to score the film. Barry left the project because Streisand insisted that he move from New York to Los Angeles to work on the score, and Barry did not want to work with "someone constantly looking over my shoulder." Streisand hired James Newton Howard. Barry later retitled his "Prince of Tides" theme as "Moviola," and released it on his 1992 album of the same name.
  • Written By Castmember: Although she didn't receive on-screen credit for it, Barbra Streisand was one of the screenwriters of the film. In an article in US Magazine in 1992, Pat Conroy said: "It was that kind of amazing attention Barbra gave to detail. She put her mark on everything...I've never seen anyone go through a total immersion in a project like she does...I mean, here is how much input I had on the script —- I think Barbra actually wrote it. She certainly wrote more of it than I did...she should have taken a screenwriting credit on it."
