69 Love Songs was at one point going to have an alphabetical theme: A 26 song double album (with a different title of course), with one song for each letter of the alphabet. As an artifact of this, it starts with a song beginning with "A" ("Absolutely Cuckoo") and ends with songs starting with "X" and "Z" ("Xylophone Track" and "Zebra").
Tropes:
He Also Did: The Accordionist, Daniel Handler, also wrote A Series of Unfortunate Events. In turn, a different Stephin Merritt project, The Gothic Archies, provided one song for each audiobook edition of the novels, which were later collected on the album The Tragic Treasury.
Similarly Named Works: Distortion has a song called "California Girls", which presents a harsher view of its subject than the same-named song by The Beach Boys.
