Trivia / The Lathe of Heaven

Go To

  • California Doubling: Takes place in Portland, Oregon, but the PBS adaptation was filmed in the DFW Metroplex. Dallas City Hall, Reunion Tower and the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the Fort Worth Water Gardens, the Tandy Center Subway, and the DFW Airport people-mover are prominently displayed.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The PBS movie is out of print on DVD, but it has been uploaded to YouTube.
  • Literary Allusion Title: The title was meant to be a quotation from the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi: "To let understanding stop at what cannot be understood is a high achievement. Those who cannot do it will be destroyed on the lathe of heaven." Le Guin only discovered afterwards that this was a mistranslation, as the lathe had not been invented in China when Zhuangzi wrote.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The DVD release of the PBS adaptation of the novel was delayed by rights issues pertaining to the use of The Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends". A cover version was eventually used in the re-release.
