- Troubled Production:
- John Huston, who had worked with star George C. Scott twice before, was hired as the original director despite not liking the script very much. This meant that Huston and his son Tony were constantly re-writing the script during filming, which caused repeated clashes with Scott worsened by the actor's drinking problem. After one month of shooting, Huston walked off the set.
- Subsequently, the producer fired lead actress Tina Aumont, claiming "she couldn't act" and had trouble finding a suitable replacement. Meanwhile, new director Richard Fleischer likewise disliked the script and ordered the original screenwriter to make changes. Filming restarted before Aumont's replacement had been cast, and before the screenplay had been finished.
