Trivia / The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Go To

  • Approval of God: Suzanne Collins was the one who had Effie replace the character Fulvia in this film, loving Elizabeth Banks's performance. In the book Effie only appears briefly near the end, but Collins called the director and said "there's no way Effie can't be in the Mockingjay films".
  • Billing Displacement: Jena Malone as Johanna Mason in Part 1 is billed above many characters who have way more screen time than she does. She essentially makes a glorified cameo at the end giving Katniss a quick smile, compared to characters like Beetee (who shows up often to discuss plans using his technological expertise), Cressida and her crewmembers (who stay with Katniss almost all the time to film the propos), or even Canon Foreigner Egeria (who acts as Snow's primary adviser).
  • California Doubling: Atlanta continues to represent Panem, much like it did in Catching Fire.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Jennifer Lawrence didn't think much of her singing voice; she disliked "The Hanging Tree" as a result.
    • On the run-up to the release of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Francis Lawrence gave an interview in which he expressed regret splitting Mockingjay into two films. Although he stood by the decision back when the films were released, he changed his mind as the years went by, and stated that if he could turn back time, he would have never done it.
  • Dawson Casting: Katniss is still 17-year-old as these films take place a few months after Catching Fire, but Jennifer Lawrence continues to grow (23 years old at the time of filming). Same as Peeta (Josh Hutcherson, 21) and 19-year-old Gale (Liam Hemsworth, 23).
  • Deleted Scene:
    • Katniss getting made-up prior to filming the propo, with Effie being horrified by District 13's efforts.
    • President Snow meets with Peeta, complimenting him on his interview and making it clear that he needs him to convince the rebels to back down.
  • Enforced Method Acting:
    • Francis Lawrence made use of the close real-life relationship between Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, and Jennifer's vocal displeasure with Josh being absent for most of the shoot. All of Peeta's interview segments were shot and edited before they shot the scenes where Katniss sees them, and they actually played the interviews for Jennifer and Liam Hemsworth during the takes to get the right emotional response from her.
    • Jennifer Lawrence trolled Liam Hemsworth by only eating fish and foods with garlic before their kissing scenes, thus helping with the general awkwardness.
  • Fake American: Several. Liam Hemsworth and Stef Dawson (both Australians), Paula Malcolmson (Northern Irish), and Sam Claflin (English) as Gale, Annie, Mrs. Everdeen, and Finnick, respectively, are carried over from the previous films. The films also introduce Natalie Dormer and Sarita Choudhury (both English) as Cressida and Egeria, respectively.
  • In Memoriam: Part 1 was dedicated to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died after filming had been completed.
  • Posthumous Credit: Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died nine months before the film's premiere, reprises his role as Plutarch.
  • So My Kids Can Watch: Julianne Moore's two children were fans of the book, and convinced her to sign on to play Alma Coin.
  • Throw It In!: Natalie Dormer improvised most of Cressida's directions to the twins and Finnick when his speech is being filmed, citing inspiration from how the film's director did so. She ad-libbed a lot of her other scenes too.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Jodie Foster was strongly considered for Alma Coin before Julianne Moore was cast.
    • The ending to Part 1 was meant to be the opening of Part 2. The original ending was to be when Boggs knocks Peeta out and the movie fades to black. It was felt that was too big of a cliffhanger.
    • Part 1 was going to open with a scene where Peeta would tell President Snow that he doesn't support the rebellion or Katniss's role in it (not knowing about the atrocities committed by Snow yet).
