• Banned in China: Or at least Banned in Texas. A few schools in Texas banned the books for sexual content and nudity involving teens; one junior high school went as far as banning even books in the series that hadn't yet been written or published.
• Creator Backlash: A mild example. In the early 2020s, the Casts publicly acknowledged the criticism that the early House of Night books contained "a lot of slut shaming and other offensive and problematic language", with Kristin Cast referring to it as "cringeworthy and ignorant" in an Instagram post, and that they were working with publishers to revise future e-book editions so that this content was less prevalent.
• Dear Negative Reader: In response to criticisms over the frequent usage of derogatory or offensive language in the earlier books (including from characters intended to be heroic / sympathetic), P.C. Cast tweeted that when she began writing the books in 2005, she used language that reflected then-contemporary teenage vernacular and that if you were bothered by it you should stop reading. She later backtracked a bit, with both P.C. and Kristin Cast assuring readers that the new e-book editions of House of Night would be revised to remove this language and that the more recent Other World series didn't include this. The printed editions of the books are apparently unchanged, though.
• Follow the Leader: The series is part of the boom in the Young Adult vampire genre caused by The Twilight Saga; P.C. Cast began writing the series in 2005, the same year Twilight was published, and the first two House of Night books were released in 2007.
• What Could Have Been: It was announced in 2011 that the rights to a film adaptation of the series had been acquired by production company Davis Films, with Lionsgate as a distributor. However, the film adaptation fell into Development Hell and was ultimately never made. In 2019, it was announced that Don Carmody and David Cormican (known for producing Shadowhunters) would be developing a TV adaptation instead (though Davis Films is still involved).
