Trivia / The Grand Illusion

Go To

  • Banned in China: The film was banned in Nazi Germany chiefly because of its anti-war message, and what were perceived as ideological criticisms of national-socialism on the eve of World War II, such as having a sympathetic Jewish character.
  • Cast the Expert: Actually inverted with Erich von Stroheim, who had been in Hollywood so long he'd lost most of his proficiency in German and actually struggled with his German lines.
  • Wag the Director: Erich von Stroheim, an accomplished director in his own right, tried this early on, culminating in a major argument with Jean Renoir that drove both men to tears. After that they reconciled and Renoir gave von Stroheim major leeway in shaping the character of von Rauffenstein.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: Renoir and von Stroheim worked out the dialogue for most of von Stroheim's scenes right before they were shot.
