• Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: Charley Wigram's actor Laurie Flexman has cerebral palsy.
• Follow the Leader: In tone and style, and in terms of covering the same events and the same historical figures in very much the same way, the film is this to the second half of the 1983 miniseries Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years. The Gathering Storm picks up where the fourth episode of The Wilderness Years ends, and like the miniseries it ends with Churchill being invited to join Chamberlain's war cabinet as First Lord of the Admiralty. Even the scene where Clementine has an argument with Churchill, and throws a dish of vegetables to the floor, is a replay of a very similar scene in The Wilderness Years. However, the series paints Churchill as more flawed (e.g. showing his violent dislike of Indian independence, and his wrong-headed for support for Edward VIII during the abdication crisis).
