- Awesome, Dear Boy:
- Juliette Binoche knew she wanted to be in the film the minute she read the scene when Kip shows Hana the fresco paintings on the walls of a church.
- Kristin Scott Thomas actively lobbied Anthony Minghella for the part of Katherine. She was cast after writing him a letter which included the statement "I am 'K' in your film".
- Channel Hop: The film was originally going to be made at 20th Century Fox, but they wanted to cast big-name actors. It was then taken to Miramax.
- Deleted Role: According to Clive Merrsion in a interview with Toby Hadoke he was on the film for a month but his role was cut to one scene. He also revealed that many other actors had their role totally deleted from the film.
- Extremely Lengthy Creation: From first draft of the screenplay to final cut, the film took four years.
- Fake Nationality: In the movie, Juliette Binoche (French) plays Hana (French-Canadian); Willem Dafoe (American) plays Caravaggio (Canadian); and Naveen Andrews (English) plays Kip (Indian).note Ralph Fiennes, who plays the title character, actually is English. His character isn't, he's Hungarian.

- Daniel Day-Lewis turned down the role of Lazlo.
- Nicole Kidman met with Anthony Minghella to discuss playing Katherine. Demi Moore and Sharon Stone lobbied for the role.
- Bruce Willis was offered the role of Caravaggio but was talked out of taking the role by his then agent. Sean Connery was also interested, but unavailable. The studio suggested Danny DeVito, Richard Dreyfuss or John Goodman for the role.
