The 1980 film

• The Cast Show Off: In the film, John and Claire bond over a riding excursion. In Real Life, Van Devere was an avid equestrian. Scott, however, was terrified of riding and was replaced by a body double instead.
• Completely Different Title: The movie is titled "At the end of the stairs" in Spain, perhaps because of the absence of the Changeling Fantasy in the local folklore.
• Fake American: Everyone but George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, and Melvyn Douglas.
• Playing Against Type: A rare example of Scott being a pleasant human being.
• Real-Life Relative: Scott and Van Devere, who play Just Friends in the film, were Happily Married in Real Life.
• Write What You Know: Russell Hunter, who wrote the screenplay along with William Grey and Diana Maddox, claimed that the film was based on his own experiences while staying in a haunted house in 1969.
• Vancouver Doubling: The Ur-Example: British Columbia doubles for Seattle, something that would become very, VERY common.
