Trivia / The Birthday Party

Go To

The play:

  • Playing Against Type: Robert Shaw, best known for his swashbuckler or villainous roles, plays a rather weak and mild-mannered man whose will and spirit are completely broken following his encounter with two operatives from a mysterious "organization".

The band:

  • Breakup Breakout: Nick Cave, with The Bad Seeds or otherwise, is much better known and commercially successful than The Birthday Party.
  • Creator Backlash: Door, Door. Nick Cave later called it "one of the worst records ever recorded", and also said "I think my singing style at that particular period was totally repulsive. It was really disgusting". He particularly regrets singing Rowland's composition "Shivers", feeling that Howard would have done the song more justice.
  • Late Export for You: Prayers on Fire was the only one of their records to get an US release when it was new, and that was it until a Greatest Hits Album in 1992. The band's complete catalog was finally issued in America in 1997.
  • Short-Lived, Big Impact: Only four years of releases; still inspiring Post-Punk, Goth Rock and Death Rock bands to this day.
