Trivia / That '90s Show

Go To

  • Blooper: In the opening scene of "That '90s Pilot" Kitty greets Eric by, as he puts it, motor boating him. Topher Grace then spends the rest of the scene with a noticeable skin-colored spot from Debra Jo Rupp's makeup on his shirt.
  • The Character Died with Him: Kitty mentioning her mother Bea's grave—and that her ashes were scattered—means she passed away since last appearing in the original series. This is likely because actress Betty White passed away in 2021 at age 99.
  • Creator Backlash: Mila Kunis has expressed her disappointment that Jackie ended up with Kelso, avowing her belief that she and Fez should have remained together. And openly recognizing that the only reason Jackie/Kelso happened is that she ended up with Ashton Kutcher in real life.
  • Dawson Casting: Due to the Sequel Gap, the That '70s Show regulars are all much older than their characters.
    • Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, 80 and 72 years old in 2023, respectively, playing the 60-somethings Red and Kitty.
    • The former That '70s Show teen leads are now in their late-30s to mid-40s playing their mid-30s characters.
    • In episode six, Brian Austin Green plays himself circa 1995 playing David Silver on Beverly Hills, 90210 where he was ironically one of the few high school-aged actors on the show. This is, however, a continuation of a Running Gag from That '70s Show where pop-culture figures from the decade appeared as themselves despite clearly being older than they were in the actual decade.
    • Averted with the kids as all of them are played by actual teenagers, with Mace Coronel being the oldest at 18.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Laura Prepon directed the final two episodes in Season 1
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: Due to being on trial for sexual assault at the time of the first season, Danny Masterson (Hyde) is the only surviving original That '70s Show regular to not return. After the first season was completed, he was found guilty of 2 of the 3 counts and sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. It is unlikely he will ever return.
  • Role Reprise: Kurtwood Smith, Debra Jo Rupp, Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Wilmer Valderrama, Tommy Chong, and Don Stark, as well as recurring guest star Jim Rash, all reprise their roles from That '70s Show after nearly 17 years.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting:
    • Callie Haverda as Leia Forman has an incredibly strong resemblance to her on-screen father, Topher Grace.
    • Mace Coronel as Jay Kelso looks remarkably like the actors of his on-screen parents, Ashton Kutcher (Michael Kelso) and Mila Kunis (Jackie Burkhart), even having a similar facial structure as Kutcher and hair color and lips as Kunis.
  • Sequel Gap: That '70s Show ended in May 2006; That '90s Show premiered in January 2023.
  • Similarly Named Works: "That '90s Show" was also the title of a 2008 episode of The Simpsons.
  • Throw It In!:
  • What Could Have Been: Tanya Roberts had stated her interest in returning to the role of Midge Pinciotti in any follow-ups to That '70s Show. Sadly, she passed away on January 4, 2021, 9 months before That '90s Show was announced.
