- Technology Marches On: One plot twist hinges on the small plastic canisters that hold film from cameras, and at one point Dresden finds one with a completed roll of film in it ready to be taken to a kiosk for development. Digital photography largely superseded film photography in the years following this book's release.
- Justified if the one who recruited the photographer knew that the black magic rituals they'd been tasked to record on the sly might short out a digital camera, and therefore specifically requested old-school film be used instead.
- What Could Have Been: Word of God is that the first book's title was originally to be "Semiautomagic", in order to invoke a mix of Hardboiled Detective and Urban Fantasy, but he was talked out of it by the publisher.
