Trivia / Stargirl (2020)

Go To

  • Actor-Inspired Element: An interesting case. When Artemis dons her own supervillain identity, it's modelled after her father's instead of her mother's, wearing a full-body covering sports gear attire; this was because Stella Smith (Artemis) was underage during the time of filming, which meant they had to conceal the fact they were using a stunt double, and thus required a costume that was more identity-concealing.
  • Actor-Shared Background: Yvette Monreal is, like Yolanda Montez, a Latina and has said she was raised very Catholic as well.
  • Approval of God: Brec Bassinger and Yvette Monreal have expressed support for Courtney/Yolanda, and like to fuel it with some social media posts. Similarly, though the show hasn't hinted at them being anything more than close friends, the official social media accounts of the series has reposted Rick/Beth-supporting content.
  • California Doubling: The series mostly takes place in a fictional town in Nebraska (other than the beginning of the pilot episode, which takes place in California), but the series is filmed in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
  • The Cast Showoff: Jim France, who plays Norwegian immigrant Sofus Makhent, can actually speak fluent Norwegian. Well... almost fluent, anyway.
  • Channel Hop: When Season 2 was confirmed, it was also announced that the show would move to the CW.
  • Dawson Casting: Like so often in entertainment, high schoolers are portrayed by young adults instead.
    • Brec Bassinger and Cameron Gellman are a good 5 years older than their characters at 21.
    • Jake Austin Walker is slightly worse at 22, same with Anjelika Washington as both actors were born in the same year, 1998.
    • Yvette Monreal and Hunter Sansone are the worst offenders, as they are over a decade older at 27. Not that Monreal looks it. Sansone, however, makes the least convincing teenager with his young adult looks and deep voice.
    • Meg DeLacy is right behind them at 24, 6-8 years older than Cindy Burman.
    • Downplayed but this even accounts for Trae Romano, who is about 2-4 years older than Mike.
  • Fake Nationality:
    • The Norwegian-American Jordan Mahkent is played by English actor Neil Jackson.
    • Similarly, his parents Sofus and Lily are Norwegian immigrants, but are played by British-American actors Jim France and Kay Galvin, respectively.
    • Australian actor Christopher James Baker plays American Henry King Sr. / Brainwave.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Courtney shows disdain towards the idea of becoming a cheerleader (a Mythology Gag to the comics, where she became one purely as a means of a secret identity and hated every moment of it). Brec Bassinger is a former professional cheerleader.
  • The Other Darrin: Jim Gaffigan playsnote  the Thunderbolt in season 2, but is replaced by Seth Green for Season 3.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Like his character Todd Rice, Tim Gabriel is queer in Real Life.
  • Reality Subtext: In "Summer School Chapter Eight", Eclipso's taunts towards Beth about how she stole her goggles rather than earning them and how she's useless in a fight were inspired by actual criticisms Anjelika Washington has faced from online trolls.
  • Role Reprise: Jay Garrick is once again played by John Wesley Shipp, even wearing the same costume, though it is a separate incarnation of the character on yet another, different Earth.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting:
    • Trae Romano (Mike Dugan) bears an uncanny resemblance to Luke Wilson (Pat Dugan).
    • Similarly, Brec Bassinger (Courtney) and Amy Smart (Barbara Whitmore) have very similarly shaped faces.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Yvette Monreal revealed on Instagram that Yolanda was originally going to have red hair like in the comics, but it never made it past the wardrobe test.
    • Early concept art depicts Dr. Mid-Nite II training McNider's pet owl Hootie. Beth never meets Hootie in the show itself, as he abruptly disappears during Season 1. At least Dr. Chapel gets to take a codename in his honor, once she's accepted as a sidekick for Beth in the series' final episode.
    • According to Neil Jackson, a scene was written out of Season 1 where Cameron would manifest his ice powers in the bathroom. In a homage to the bathroom scene in the Teen Wolf movie, his father would try to come in while Cameron was struggling with them and trying to keep him at bay, until Jordan came through the door in ice form himself, like the werewolf dad.
    • With its cancellation at season 3, the "five-year plan" Geoff Johns had for the show, as noted by the cast in season 1 press release when talking about how he is as a showrunner, will evidently not be followed up on. Fortunately, they had enough advance warning to end with a Distant Finale that establishes the characters mostly lived happily ever after.
  • Word of Saint Paul: When asked on Instagram if Yolanda still had feelings for Henry long after the incident, Yvette Monreal claimed that she did indeed still love him deep down, she was just “mad”, and “you’re only mad if you still care”.
