- Development Gag: In at least two realities, Riker has been the Enterprise's captain since "The Best of Both Worlds", which was strongly considered when it was unclear if Patrick Stewart would renew his contract.
- What Could Have Been:
- Originally it was going to be Picard hopping between realities, but Brannon Braga thought Picard's relationships wouldn't change much from reality to reality, and thus would be less jarring, so he decided to make it happen to Worf instead.
- The writers thought of bring back Tasha Yar on one of the alternate Enterprises, but it got vetoed because it was redundant after "Yesterday's ''Enterprise". However, they did bring back Wesley Crusher.
- The Enterprise that tried to shoot at Worf was originally supposed to be from the Mirror Universe. This was changed, in part because they couldn't figure out a good reason for a mirror Enterprise to be attacking Worf's shuttle other than For the Evulz, and also because Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had its own Mirror Universe episode in the works, the story of which made the existence of an ISS Enterprise-D impossible.
