- Creator Backlash: Director Robert Scheerer commented:I was disappointed with 'Tin Man.' It was an interesting show, but I don't think that I pulled off the sense sufficiently of the living ship. God knows I tried. We struggled and struggled with it, but we ended up a little bit insufficiently fulfilled – I thought. An interesting show, but I don't think I did my best work in that show.
- Development Gag: The Ghorusda Disaster that Tam was involved in several years prior caused the deaths of 47 Starfleet officers. The number is a refernce Joe Menosky put in from his college years.
- The Show of the Books: An extremely rare example where a novel becomes a TV episode. Dennis Putman Bailey and David Bischoff co-wrote a short story and later a novel called “Tin Woodman” not set in the Star Trek universe. They developed their novel into a spec script after watching a sub-par second season episode and pitched it to the Next Generation’s producers who bought and produced it for season three.
