- Executive Meddling:
- Gene Roddenberry was infamous for interfering in the Expanded Universe during his lifetime, demanding changes and dictating what writers could and could not use. For example, Roddenberry directly ordered that the character of R.J. Blaise, a Protocol Officer (and love interest) assigned by Starfleet to keep tabs on Kirk, be dropped from DC's Star Trek, leading to her abruptly vanishing in the middle of an arc without explanation.
- Roddenberry wasn't alone in his meddling, as Paramount Studios themselves often directly stepped in to dictate to creators. Such interference is what prompted Peter David to quit the franchise altogether.
