• Refitted for Sequel: Worf's fate at the end of this episode was originally scripted to happen to Riker at the end of TNG's "The Pegasus", until it was deemed too much of a Downer Ending and changed. With this being a Darker and Edgier show, and the stakes involved in Worf's mission, it was deemed more appropriate to use here.
• What Could Have Been: By the time of this episode, Terry Farrell had already decided she wanted to leave the show, and lobbied the writers to have Worf make the rendezvous at the price of Dax dying. They chose to have her survive, and instead killed Dax in "Tears of the Prophets".
