• The Unreveal: The original intention by the show writers was to have had Weyoun clap Odo on the shoulder in "To the Death", which would be when the virus he suffers from this episode was transferred. However, because of the angle the scene was shot from, the shoulder-slap was not visible, leaving it unexplained exactly how Odo was infected.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Chalan Aroya was intended to be Odo's love interest for Season 5, and a way of torpedoing any chance of Odo and Kira ever becoming a couple, leaving the writers free to develop the romance between Kira and Shakaar. However, viewer reaction to Chalan was generally negative, leading to her never appearing again, while other problems would ultimately scuttle any attempts to make Shakaar into a regularly recurring character, and with it, his relationship with Kira.
  • Mary Kay Adams, who had previously played Grilka in "The House of Quark", was nearly cast as Chalan. The part ultimately went to Jill Jacobson, but Adams was brought back for another appearance as Grilka early in the following season.
