• Development Gag: Garak's joke about eating the data rod was a reference to how the episode originally ended; Bashir would find the rod and threaten to expose whatever was on it, causing Tain to release Odo and Garak and then order his fleet (the Romulans not yet being involved in that version of the script) to go home, without it ever being revealed what was on the rod. The producers hated this ending, feeling it was a massive letdown, so they went so far as to turn it into a two-parter, with a Take That! to the original concept left in.
• Directed by Cast Member: This is Avery Brooks' fourth directorial credit on the show. It's the first episode that is part of a two-parter to be directed by a cast member.
