Trivia / Square Enix

  • Breakthrough Hit: Square was saved from bankruptcy when Hironobu Sakaguchi released the original Final Fantasy. He thought it would be the last game before Square collapsed. It wasn't.
  • Cash Cow Franchise: Three of them: Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts.
    • Just for reference, Square Enix thought that six million units sold of Tomb Raider was a financial disaster.
      • This deserves some at least SOME explanation. It wasn't that six million units sold was a bad number because they said it sold well too. It was that they sunk so much into the game from developing, making it look 'nice', and advertisement that they barely made any money on it.

    • Fullmetal Alchemist is this for Gangan Comics.
  • No Export for You: An infamous case. For the longest time, Square didn't even have a European branch, and as such the games didn't see the light of day there until Final Fantasy VII. The Western world still suffers from this, although not as much.
    • For the longest time, Square refused to sell any of the Updated Re-release games in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, titled Final Mixes, despite the fact that all the voice acting in the Japanese game was in English! To add insult to injury, the Final Mix for Birth By Sleep was released only four months after the original game was released outside of Japan. This was finally averted with the release of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD in America and Europe, and the announcement that 2.5 would be as well.
