Trivia / Soupy Sales

Go To

  • Breakaway Pop Hit: While "The Mouse" only got to #76 nationally on the Billboard Hot 100note , it was a massive hit in and around New York City in 1965.
  • Old Shame: The 1966 film Birds Do It. Despite his starring role, Sales was quite vocal as to his dislike of the finished product.
  • Sending Stuff to Save the Show: The New Year's Eve "funny green pieces of paper" incident. It's sometimes claimed that Sales did this out of spite towards the studio or the show's producer, but Sales' explanation was more mundane: he ran out of material for that show and ad-libbed a silly joke at the end to fill airtime, not imagining that anyone would take him seriously. He got a lot of play money and some actual cash, which was donated to charity, as well as a two-week suspension because of all the complaints from parents.
  • Throw It In!: Constantly. The show's barely-scripted structure allowed for constant ad-libs from Soupy, the puppets, and the production crew.
