- Completely Different Title: The film was retitled as Moy paren' - psih: Istoriya optimista (My Boyfriend is a Psycho: An Optimist's Story) in Russia.
- Dyeing for Your Art: Jennifer Lawrence dyed her blonde hair black, which ended up ruining it. She was also advised to gain weight for the role.
- Fake American: Australian Jacki Weaver plays an American.
- Irony as She Is Cast: Jennifer Lawrence joked that Bradley Cooper was the more natural dancer of the two of them when they were practising their routine for the finale. She plays the trained dancer, while Cooper plays an amateur with only a few weeks of training.
- Playing Against Type:
- Chris Tucker (known for playing loud, obnoxious, shrill characters) playing the somewhat kooky but mostly very even-tempered Danny.
- Also applies behind-the-camera - if you didn't know going in that this movie's very restrained, guitar-led score came from the pen of Danny Elfman, you'd never have guessed.
- Reality Subtext: Bradley Cooper is a Philadelphia Eagles fan like his character Pat.
- Those Two Actors: Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence star in their first David O. Russell project - followed by American Hustle and Joy (2015). They also play lovers in Serena.
- Throw It In!:
- Pat Sr's Manly Tears when he wishes he and his son were closer were unscripted, and Robert De Niro was actually tearing up for real.
- Jacki Weaver noticed that when filming the dance scene, the judges' scores didn't average five. So she told a producer and it was changed, preventing a massive Blooper.
- What Could Have Been:
- Anne Hathaway was originally cast to play Tiffany, but left due to Creative Differences. This may explain Tiffany's Vague Age, as Hathaway is several years older than Jennifer Lawrence. Regardless, they both won Oscars that year. Also considered were Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Angelina Jolie, Blake Lively, Rachel McAdams, Rooney Mara and Olivia Wilde.
- David O. Russell mentioned in an interview that while writing the script, he originally had Vince Vaughn and Zooey Deschanel considered for the lead roles.
