  • Ascended Fanon: The nicknames for Godzilla's first two land-capable forms, "Kamata-kun" and "Shinagawa-kun" (after the wards the monster rampages through, respectively), were later used in official advertising and merchandising after being popularized online through fan art.
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: Hideaki Anno was given a limited window to work on this movie around the time he was wrapping up work on the third Rebuild of Evangelion movie, which he jumped aboard immediately at the cost of delaying the last movie in the series. As it turned out, this is just what the doctor ordered for Anno (see below).

  • Creator Recovery: Technically acts as one for Hideaki Anno, who suffered a(nother) Creator Breakdown while working on the Rebuild of Evangelion movies and had to postpone production on them in order to work on this one. Anno has since suggested that working on this film has reignited his love of filmmaking, and his desire to work on his projects. The final Rebuild movie was finally released on March 8, 2021.
  • Fake Nationality: Kayoko Ann Patterson, the American envoy to Japan, is played by native-born Japanese actress Satomi Ishihara, though the film tries to get around this by having her be Japanese-American.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "Nightmare Godzilla" for the new design. Quite fitting too. Read below.
    • A lesser nickname for the new Godzilla is "ShinG", which suspiciously sounds like "Shinji", the name of the protagonist of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    • Some have simply call him "Shin". However, since Shin is actually a name in Japan, it works as a Meaningful Name, but not without redundancy.
    • "Tailzilla" or "Tailface" for the face on the tip of Godzilla's tail.
    • The second and third forms of Godzilla have been nicknamed "Kamata-kun" and "Shinigawa-kun" respectively by the fandom after the locations they rampaged through. The fourth form continues the theme by being named “Kamakura-san”, after the city where he emerged after assuming this form.
  • Flip-Flop of God: The film's title, Shin-Gojira was originally given the English transcription of Godzilla Resurgence. A few days before the film's Japanese release, at the insistence of Toho, Funimation has changed the film's English title to SHIN GODZILLA.
  • Market-Based Title: Not as frustrating as other Godzilla titles (especially most, if not all, of the Showa films). In Japan, it's called Shin-Gojira. Internationally, it was called Godzilla Resurgence (English posters still have the title). In the US, it's called Shin Godzilla. The last one was changed because Toho wanted Funimation to use it as its English title in the US.

  • No Export for You: Thankfully averted. Toho had announced that the film will be released in 100 territories, making it the biggest release of any Godzilla film made by Toho. Even better: Funimation has acquired U.S. distribution rights for the movie and had a limited theatrical release in October 11-18 and they released the DVD and Blu-Ray versions in August 2017.
  • Production Posse: Hideaki Anno, Shinji Higuchi, and Shiro Sagisu have all worked together on Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, and various other projects, with Higuchi and Sagisu also previously working on the live-action Attack on Titan films.
    • Speaking of Evangelion, some people involved on the series made the storyboards for the film, like Masayuki.
  • Same Language Dub: The Funimation dub of the film also have voice actors for American characters.
  • What Could Have Been: The design works book showcases concept art for all five of Shin Godzilla's forms, as well as a variety of other ideas that ultimately went unused.
    • Among the humanoid Godzillas, only one of them came out female holding a prayer-like pose.
    • Originally, Godzilla was going to begin in a traditional form, only to evolve into something weird. Toho told them no, so instead, they made something weird evolve into Godzilla.
