Trivia / Rule of Rose

  • Banned in China: The UK release was postponed indefinitely due to pressure from members of Parliament; and the game was banned outright in France, Italy, and Australia. These followed an Italian magazine's moral-panic story about it, alleging that sexual contact between minors takes place in the game. Hysteria was not helped by the fact that the trailer doing the rounds at the time featured the obviously school-age Diana suggestively raising the hem-line of her dress, whilst smiling coquettishly. Add to these the European impression then that all video games are universally for children, and commence the outcry. While those allegations are dubious at best, lesbians of the (chaste) Pseudo-Romantic Friendship sort are a major theme, though it was likely ultimately unreleased/banned because of the adult characters doing harm to minors.
  • Creator Killer: Due to the game's controversy and poor sales, developer Punchline has not released a game since.
  • Dummied Out: A couple of costumes and recorded voice lines, indicating that the game would have had more chapters, but the developers ran out of time and money.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: One of the harder-to-find PlayStation 2 games, as well as one of the more expensive, currently averages around $700.
  • No Export for You: Pressure from Moral Guardians resulted in the UK release of the game being cancelled.
  • Playing Against Type: Producer Yoshiro Kimura is better known for his whimsical, cartoony video game projects with Love-de-Lic, like Moon: Remix RPG Adventure or Chulip. While he would later be involved in the No More Heroes series, nothing compares to this somber, introspective horror game about female sexuality. Hearing him discuss its production on You Tube compared to Moon can be a little jarring.
