Trivia / Rosetta

  • Common Knowledge: It's often been reported that the film inspired "Rosetta's Law," a Belgian law that prohibits employers from paying teen workers less than the minimum wage. In fact, the law had already been written before the film was made (although it was passed after its release.)
  • Dark Horse Victory: Rosetta's Palme d'Or victory was this. In 1999, The Dardennes were respected but fairly obscure filmmakers, with just one feature under their belt. The Palme was expected to go to Pedro Almodóvar's All About My Mother; however, David Cronenberg and the rest of that year's Cannes jury absolutely loved Rosetta, the last film screened for the competition, and unanimously picked it for the Palme.
  • Star-Making Role: Émilie Dequenne gained much attention thanks to this film.
