Trivia tropes for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Trivia with Their Own Pages

  • Actor-Inspired Element: Like Hypno-Potamus' voice actor Rhys Darby, he is stated to be from New Zealand.
  • All-Star Cast: The cast is filled with actors such as John Cena (prior to Season 2), Lena Headey, John Lydon, Ben Schwartz, and Zelda Williams, as well as big names in the voice acting industry such as Tom Kenny, Maurice Lamarche, and Rob Paulsen (who is also the voice director for this series).
  • Casting Gag:
  • Channel Hop:
  • Diagnosis of God: Staff writer Ron Corcillo has stated that he views the show's versions of Donnie and Mikey as possibly having autism and ADD respectively.
  • Early-Bird Release: The episodes "Purple Jacket" and "Pizza Pit" were released early on iTunes in December of 2018. The episodes themselves aired in January and February of 2019, respectively.
  • Executive Meddling:
    • According to Russ Carney, the show was intended to be entirely composed of standalones, but Nickelodeon requested that the series feature story arcs.
    • Season 2 had a 26-episode order, but due to the toy sales of the series doing poorly, Nickelodeon cut it in half, and gave the crew six weeks to write up the series finale.
    • Nickelodeon demanded that the Turtles have a catchphrase, so the crew decided to go with "Hot Soup!" as a joke.
  • The Other Darrin: John Cena was replaced by Roger Craig Smith as the voice of Baron Draxum for season 2, most likely due to John Cena having a busy schedule and being expensive, but also due to Draxum appearing more regularly than in Season 1.
  • Out of Order: A number of the episodes in the series have very clear continuity with each other, but Nickelodeon has aired episodes on television that introduced certain concepts after they had been shown.
  • Playing Against Type:
    • The villainous Baron Draxum is voiced by John Cena, an All-American Face for the current generation of professional wrestling. It should be noted, however, that Cena had a Face–Heel Turn phase in 2003 during his wrestling career.
      • His replacement, Roger Craig Smith, also follows suit, since he's more known for voicing heroes like Batman, Captain America, and Sonic The Hedgehog. Draxum does end up becoming more heroic, however.
    • Maurice LaMarche plays the Foot Brute, a much larger character than he usually plays. By that same token, Rob Paulsen uses a much more gravelly voice when he voices the Foot Lieutenant, in addition to the fact he plays a villain in this series and not one of the turtles.
    • Hoon Lee, who played the 2012 Splinter, plays this series' incarnation of the Shredder in the Season 2 finale.
    • In "Always Be Brownies", Haley Tju voices a character named Julia, who's a big jerk. This stands out from other characters she voices like Stella and Marcy, who are nice, and Karmi, who do have some redeeming qualities.
    • Compared to Zelda Williams' more serious roles as Kuvira or even the last incarnation's Mona Lisa, her role as the Foot Recruit is much more comedic and bombastic, in a manner similar to her father.
  • Production Posse: Some of the crew members of the previous series also work on this show.
  • Quarter Hour Short: A lot of the episodes air in this manner.
  • Recast as a Regular: Roger Craig Smith played additional voices in the show, but in Season 2, replaced John Cena as Baron Draxum.
  • Recursive Adaptation: A tie-in comic was announced in April 2018, continuing the tradition of the comic-born franchise's various adaptations getting their own comics.
  • Screwed by the Network:
    • On October 12, 2019, for seemingly no clarified reason, the show was banished to Nicktoons and only had premieres there... at 10:30 pm. The first season wasn't even finished when this happened.
    • Originally, season 2 was supposed to have 26 half-hours like season 1, but this was cut in half because of low merchandise sales, and the series ended with little-to-no announcements.
  • Trolling Creator: The crew of the series said that Leonardo would become leader at some point later on in the series. He becomes leader in the last few seconds of the series finale.
  • Troubled Production: From what was said of a Twitch stream by series alum documented on Twitter after The Movie came out, the show had difficulties due to higher-ups at Nickelodeon having conflicting ideas on what the show should be like, such as many of the episodes being designed to be easy to be replay, but also cater to older viewers who preferred serialized storytelling, and an administration change resulted in a push toward a toy-selling focus. Nickelodeon then cut Season 2 in half after the toy sales didn't do so well, which meant the crew had to scrap most of their plans, and were given six weeks to write the series finale.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: The idea to make Foot Recruit a new incarnation of Casey Jones came in during development of Season 2, per Ron Corcillo.
