  • Cast the Expert: Rick Springfield as a lead guitarist. The guitar he plays in the film is his own too.

    • Meryl Streep as an ageing rock musician, who's also a Cool Old Lady deconstruction.
    • Sebastian Stan plays a straight-up Nice Guy as opposed to his darker characters.
    • Kevin Kline as the Only Sane Man.
  • Production Posse: The third film that Meryl Streep has done with Kevin Kline and Mamie Gummer.
  • Real-Life Relative: Meryl Streep (Ricki) and Mamie Gummer (Julie) are mother and daughter in real life.
  • Advertisement:
  • Reality Subtext: Mamie Gummer's character Julie has just gotten divorced from her husband. Gummer and her husband married and divorced quickly while they were both young.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Adam mentions that part of the reason why he isn't married as being because not all gay men could get married in the US, something that was no longer the case by June of 2015.
