Trivia / Relayer

The music album

  • What Could Have Been: One candidate for Rick Wakeman's replacement on keyboards was Vangelis, since Jon Anderson was a big fan of Aphrodite's Child. What kept this from happening was a combination of Vangelis' inability to fly on a plane, rejection by the Musicians Union and his feeling that his style doesn't gel with the band. Vangelis decided to go solo, and would eventually collaborate with Anderson in the 80's.

The video game

  • Acclaimed Flop: Relayer was rated rather decently by those that took a look at it. Too bad the game was a disaster in Japanese retail, selling about 7,200 copies between both versions in its first week. While not an outright Creator Killer, it led to Kadokawa announcing that it was divesting much of its Kadokawa Games division to a separate company headed by former CEO and Relayer producer Yoshimi Yasuda, effectively washing their hands of the team and placing the fate of the planned Relayer trilogy into question.
  • Acting for Two: Media/Mintaka share a Japanese voice actress, as does Venus/Dark Walker and Sun/Aphrodite. Largely averted in the English dub, with none of the named characters sharing actors, but Caitlyn Elizabeth (Uranus) does pull double duty with a notable minor character, the author of the Original One's Apocalyptic Log.
  • Blooper: There are occasional differences between the English text and what the English voice actors actually say. One of the more notable ones is during the mission where Luna steals Selene, with Halley remarking "The slave units are starting to move differently...!" in text but "Ignore the drones and focus on the master gear!" in speech.
  • Divorced Installment: Relayer began life as "Project Stella", a prequel to defunct mobile game Starly Girls: Episode Starsia and the second part of the "Hoshimusu Project" that would have also included Hoshimusu ALLSTARS and the Vaporware "Project Europa". However, the cancellation of Hoshimusu ALLSTARS, implied end of the "Hoshimusu Project" altogether (including a rebrand of the Starly Girls Twitter account to the official Relayer Twitter), and Word of God stating that Relayer is not a console Starly Girls game suggests that Relayer has shed most of its roots as a prequel.
  • He Also Did: Kaitlyn Robrock, who voiced Venera, is the voice of Minnie Mouse as of 2020.
  • Voiced Differently in the Dub:
    • Pluto is voiced by a male actor, Zach Aguilar, in English; in the Japanese version, he's voiced by Asami Sanada in a case of Cross-Dressing Voices.
    • Saturn is given an incredibly soft, frail voice by Moa Tsukino in the Japanese version to emphasize her social awkwardness and Hikikomori traits, while Christie Cate in the English dub talks faster and gives her a more neutral tone.
    • Mintaka's Japanese voice actress, Ayano Yamamoto, gives her a youthful voice. In the English dub, Amber Lee Connors gives Mintaka a much deeper voice, almost as deep as Sun's contralto.
